FightingHi there, I guess it's a dumb questions but is there a big cure coming?04:35
de-factowhat do you mean by cure? immunization to infection? antiviral drugs blocking essential mechanisms for the virus? immuno-modulative drugs controlling the cytokine inflammation storm? anti-coagulant drugs preventing (micro) thrombosis? 04:39
de-factounderstanding of the variety of effects and mechanisms will improve over time and more effective drugs will be employed to target specific problems04:41
de-factointeresting will be preventive therapies like a multiplicity of monoclonal antibodies or possibly also those fancy new nanobodies which have sterilizing effects on the virions hence are able to prevent infection of cells04:43
de-factoalso immunization by vaccines which are developed in quite a broad variety of approaches, yet their safety and efficacy is still evaluated in clinical trials04:44
FightingCaptainCringe, well it definitely looks like its been getting worse all over the world, 04:46
CoronaBot04/r/covid19: An ultra-high affinity synthetic nanobody blocks SARS-CoV-2 infection by locking Spike into an inactive conformation (82 votes) | https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.08.08.238469v1 | https://redd.it/i7rvgh04:46
de-factothere ^^ the nanobodies i was talking about04:47
tinwhiskersfunky04:47
LjLFighting, i think a vaccine will come sooner than a "cure". i don't know if a cure will ever come. we may get more fine-tuned antivirals, and also learn to regulate the immune (dys)function better.04:49
LjLwhat could be tried in terms of drugs we already had has already been tried pretty much, i think04:50
LjLvaccines on the other hand seem promising so far04:50
Fightingso vaccine wise aren't there a few countries working on them LjL ?04:51
CoronaBot04/r/covid19: The Russian Vaccine (82 votes) | https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2020/08/11/the-russian-vaccine | https://redd.it/i7yfh404:52
LjLFighting, there are more than a hundred vaccines being worked on04:52
LjLdefinitely in many different countries04:53
LjLalthough the "frontrunners" that everyone is looking at are just 4-504:53
LjLtwo are in america, two in china, then there's oxford04:53
LjLitaly is doing something with adenovirus too but that's far from a frontrunner i guess, it's just i live there04:53
LjLthis russian one, i don't know04:54
LjLlet's see if everyone who gets it dies or what :P04:54
Fightinghah its all we can do tbh04:57
FightingI feel like if countries ,or actually more like "people" work on not spreading it then it would really help..04:58
Fightingbut in u.s for example theirs tons of protests and crap so meh its all too hell lol04:58
Fighting it's getting bad ,but likely will eventually get better, idk either way we'll find out04:58

de-factoQuite a neat overview over the various vaccines in the pipelines: https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2020/06/29/coronavirus-vaccine-update-june-2905:14
LjLFighting, in Italy it still seems to be under control, but just barely05:18

BrainstormLjL: In New Zealand, there have been 1570 confirmed cases (0.0% of the population) and 22 deaths (1.4% of cases) as of a day ago. 498480 tests were performed (0.3% positive). Fatality can be broadly expected to lie between 0.1% (assuming prevalence as in tests) and less than 1.4% (considering only deaths and recoveries). See https://offloop.net/covid19/?default=New%20Zealand for time series data.05:23
de-factowas it WHO who stated that fighting with this pandemic might take a decade?05:23
tinwhiskers4 cases in the community now. Auckland has gone back into lockdown.05:23
tinwhiskersActually Auckland is in Level 3 lockdown and the whole country has been moved to level 2.05:24
LjLde-facto, WHO is good at saying platitudes AND wrong things05:24
LjLtelling which is which left to the reader!05:24
LjLtinwhiskers, well at least that's taking it very seriously05:25
tinwhiskersyeah. I think kiwis were quire proud of being covid-free for over 100 days and kinda want to get back to that status :-)05:25
tinwhiskers*quite05:25
de-factoheh and they have assigned levels to their lockdowns, looks quite well organized in comparison to most other countries05:26
LjLwell we have "phases"05:26
LjLbut nobody understood which they are :P05:26
tinwhiskersthere were cases coming in through returning expats... 100 days community-transmission free.05:26
de-factohow could they come in?05:27
de-factowerent they required to do proper quarantine?05:27
tinwhiskersyeah, the details of the levels don't matter much; just pointing out the regional differences.05:27
tinwhiskersyes, they were, so it's unknown how it got out at this stage.05:27
tinwhiskersbut there had been some quarantine breaches. People suck.05:28
tinwhiskerssomeone borke *into* quarantine to catch up with a mate there :-/05:28
tinwhiskersa security guard had sex with one of the people in the facility05:28
tinwhiskerstwo people were let out early to go to a funeral and tested positive a couple of months ago05:28
de-factoi guess it would be unlikely that it burned "under radar" for 100 days in the community, so some sort of reimport must have evaded quarantine 05:28
tinwhiskersyeah, it probably just got out very recently.05:29
de-factohow long is quarantine and how do they get tested at the end?05:30
tinwhiskers14 days, and not sure about exit testing, but I assume so05:30

tinwhiskersyeah05:31
tinwhiskersanyway, it makes the data interesting to follow again to see how well they can do this time round :-)05:32
de-factoyeah lets hope they contain it and wrestle it down again05:33

Brainstormde-facto: From www.cambridge.org: Re-Testing for SARS-CoV-2: Patterns of Testing from a Large U.S. Healthcare System | Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology | Cambridge Core05:35
de-factoso it seems people easily can test positive for more than 14 days, if that means they still are infectious is another question though05:37
tinwhiskersyeah, but assuming exit testing, the question is can they remain presymptomatic for 14 days.05:39
tinwhiskersof course if they test positive they are not let out after 14 days.05:39
tinwhiskersrather pre-postive05:40
de-factoone test is only a momentary picture, might be negative and later positive again05:40
tinwhiskersyes, but if they get an exit test it should be detectable after 14 days05:40
de-factobut yeah PCR is highly sensitive, if it already "flickers off" when viral load is on decline people probably are not really infectious anymore (at least not comparable to how they have been before). Yet I wonder what would happen if someone in such a phase would kiss another person or such (probably quite a bad idea)05:43
tinwhiskersyeah, they could have got a false negative.05:43
tinwhiskersI think more likely is the problem of mixing cohorts within the facility 05:44
de-factoor if for some reason immune response weakens and the viral load temporarily raises again, could it possibly reach an infectious level?05:44
tinwhiskersa new person could arrive on, say, day 12 of someone else's stay, infect them, and they would pass the exit test because they are not postitive come day 14.05:45
de-factoprobably trying too hard to think about unlikely scenarios for the virus to escape quarantine and in the end its something stupid like people secretly sneaking off from it or such05:45
tinwhiskersI've always said that was a glaring loophole.05:45
tinwhiskersPeople need to be separated into date cohorts in the facility and they are not.05:46
de-factoyes thats also a possible loophole there, makes sense if that would be possible05:46
de-factoheh they should do it like Hilberts hotel in a FIFO like pattern :)05:49

LjLI'm going to remove The Guardian from the newsfeed. We've already discussed here sometimes how its headlines and page layout make it confusing to see the article you had meant to click on, and now I've had a look at Brainstorm posting statistics, and Guardian posts by far more than any other source. I also do realize this channel has now very little chat, and very much bot posting, which is partly because people are less interested in talking about COVID 21:00
LjLfor sure (since before, they would talk even with the bot posts in between, and it didn't seem a huge problem), but now that the chat has much reduced, the *appearance* of a lot of bot posting may discourage further chat. ubLIX[m]^ author of this blog usually has something insightful to say; however, enter comments thread at your own risk21:08
LjLubLIX[m], my understanding (admittedly from random media) was that yes, the phase 3 is still to come, and yet they have approved it for general use before it happens. so those two things are not necessarily at odds (despite normally being)21:11

ubLIX[m]the linked blog's author cited https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/08/russia-s-approval-covid-19-vaccine-less-meets-press-release in saying it has been certified 'to be given to “a small number of citizens from vulnerable groups,”', in the fashion similar to the US's "emergency use authorisation"21:17
LjLubLIX[m], well, the claim on the vaccine's site is it's the "first registered in the world", but if i search for what "vaccine registration" means exactly, now i'm swamped with russian vaccine info, instead of info about the process21:18
LjLbut i suppose what needs to be understood here is what "early registration" entails21:18
LjLif it's like other vaccines in that emergency authorization may be given before phase 3, then what gives about registration?21:19
LjL"including medical staff and the elderly" is a damned large early authorization group21:19
LjLi had honestly NOT expected that Russia would just be ready or willing to give this to everyone21:19

de-factowhich, imho is the wrong signal in general to imply that there is a race to the market from competitors, on the contrary they should be extra transparent on how they do NOT cut the corners and inform the public how their safety concept positions itself in detail relative to the "normal" traditional safety concepts in vaccinations21:36

de-factoimho that is at least as important as making it available, because people also have to trust into their choices, otherwise it is of theoretical help only21:42
LjLgive the vaccine effectiveness we can expect, which has often been stated (likely just guesstimates) as probably between 50% and 70%, and considering about 30% of people in the US (and probably much of Europe) would be against getting a vaccine, i suspect for actual herd immunity, the vaccine will have to be made mandatory21:45
LjLthis will not happen at first, when vaccines will only be available for specific categories of people21:45
LjLbut when we reach the stage of mass vaccination, i don't think giving people a choice whether or not to get it is going to be an option on the table21:46
LjLof course i doubt governments will mention this until the time actually comes21:46

de-factoubLIX[m], yes thats true, what I wanted to mention is that it should not be about who is first but rather who offers the most safe/reliable choice, but yeah its also about getting the contracts and agreements for production capacity etc21:54
de-factoLjL, good points indeed yet i think mandatory is the wrong way, rather information transparency for gaining trust should be employed, there already is some pressure to go for it out of the pandemic situation itself which differentiates this vaccination from the more abstract threat with another vaccination for another disease with currently is not as widespread as COVID-1922:00

LjLde-facto, i don't disagree with your in principle, but let's say hypothetically, some country does a very good information campaign, people understand it, evaluate pros and cons... and still 30% of the population decides against it. what do you do, if you're the government? do you just say "okay, then i guess we'll never stop this from staying strongly endemic, oh well, we tried", or do you start thinking about making it mandatory?22:34

de-factoLjL yes because those who aren't immune due to vaccination will then either recover from challenge with the pathogen in real life or not get exposed to it anymore due to much slower spread and those with higher probability for exposure will even catch it first, hence also acquire natural immunity first22:58
de-factoi meant yes to not making it mandatory22:59
de-factoi would rather then intensify efforts to improve the transparent information campaign22:59
de-factoits not really comparable but in principle similar to making the corona warn app open source, decentralized and privacy friendly in an open and transparent way: i think that is part of the reason why so many in Germany downloaded it23:01
de-factoand even forbidding to discriminate people who choose not to install it anyhow, hence truly making it a free choice23:02
tinwhiskersI've always supported pseudo-mandatory vaccination for *most* infectious (not the flu). People who choose not to vaccinate do not get to participate in society in certain ways, such as attend public schools. Here I would see harsher restrictions, such as not being able to attend mass gatherings (stadiums, concerts, maybe even large restaurants).23:02
tinwhiskersPeople can choose but there is a steep cost of that choice.23:03
de-factotbh i think making it mandatory would play in the hands of those militant anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists23:04
tinwhiskersI don't really care what they think if it's mandatory provided they just get it forced on them or choose to piss off from society.23:05
tinwhiskersThere's no convincing some people no matter how good your communication is. You need incentives.23:06
tinwhiskersas it stands, I do not want to see any truly mandatory vaccination for covid though. There is a small risk from such new vaccines and people should be able to choose, but they should also be choosing to stay away from other people if that make that choice.23:07
de-factoits not that easy, if i remember the numbers correctly up to 5% may be those anti-vaxxers (resistant to any informations), 20%-30% are undecided skeptics and those have to be convinced by high quality transparent and digestible information rather than from the anti-vaxxers 23:07
de-factothose were numbers i remembered from a podcast in Germany23:07
tinwhiskersBy all means, improve the communication and try to sway people. It's not an either-or situation.23:08
tinwhiskersBut we can still allow those who are vaccinated greater freedoms than those who are not.23:08
de-factoyes thats what i am saying, communication is very very important23:08
tinwhiskersWe already do this to some degree. You can't get a travel visa to/from certain places without valid vaccination. e.g. yellow fever and some african countries. We can extend travel bans to other things like social gatherings, schools.23:10
tinwhiskersIf you choose not to vaccinate you'll need to have medical insurance because you won't be allowed in a public hospital <- maybe this one is over the line, but you can take it a long way.23:11

JigsyThey're doing it again...23:12
de-factoI do get your point from a logical standpoint but i disagree on making it pseudo-mandatory, I think it would cross a line there which then slowly could be escalated without really crossing any comparable lines23:12
tinwhiskersthere is a risk of a slippery slope, but slippery slopes do not always occur. If you accept that curtailing you right to freedom of movement based on yellow fever vaccination status then you're already on that slope.23:14
tinwhiskers(pretend that was written in valid English)23:16
tinwhiskersI see no reason we should let children who are not vaccinated against the measles, whooping cough, etc into public schools (true medical exceptions notwithstanding).23:17
de-factoI read even some manufacturers deny liability for their own products23:17
tinwhiskersthat's meaningless to me, since we can't sue in my country anyway.23:18
tinwhiskerswe have a govt compensation system instead so we're not all litigious like the US is.23:19
tinwhiskersthose 1 in 100k side-effects do happen so they kinda need to say that or they'd be out of business in the US. They know the risk exists yet sell it anyway = legal death.23:20
BrainstormNew from CNBC Health: (news): Accuracy of U.S. coronavirus data thrown into question as decline in testing skews drop in new cases → https://is.gd/rytXC623:21
de-factoi would happily get a vaccine if i was convinced everything possible was done to make it safe and reliable (already to end the constant worrying about preventing infection etc). I really would like that a lot. But I really do think making it (pseudo) mandatory is unethical especially because a lot of new technologies are employed, not even manufacturers themselves want to be held liable for them and longterm effects can not be determined 23:22
de-factoin time23:22
de-factothats my opinion on it23:22
tinwhiskersI agree. In the early days with all these new vaccinations we don't want to make it mandatory because a risk exists, yet, people who are under lockdown restrictions anyway are no worse off. We can give those brave individuals greater freedom if that's what they choose.23:23
bin_bashyeah, while i'm in favor of mandatory childhood vaccinations like measles, i think mandatory covid vaccine would be unwise and could backfire23:24
bin_bashespecially this early on23:24
de-factoexactly23:24
tinwhiskersfor sure23:24
bin_bashit will only fuel anti-vaccine sentiment23:24
tinwhiskersthat doesn't mean we can't reward those who do get it23:25
bin_bashagreed23:25
blkshpooh, what do i get?23:25
tinwhiskersyou get to stay at the pub all night23:25
bin_bashi think rewarding people who are willing to take the risk early on is a good idea23:25
blkshpoh, im not sure i want to do that23:25
bin_bashlolol23:25
blkshpbin_bash: how's the cat?23:25
bin_bashyou get to... *flips through cards* go to the cinema?23:25
de-factoreward yes but not discriminate those who are hesitant observing the early adopters23:26
bin_bashblkshp: cats are good!23:26
blkshp\o/23:26
blkshpCinemas are mandatory face masks throughout now.23:26
bin_bashthey got a clean bill of health, just need to have teeth cleanings in a couple weeks or so23:26
tinwhiskersde-facto: doesn't that amount to the same thing?23:26
blkshpnice :D23:26
blkshpIt's just a shame that i paid for my cinema membership before this all started literally 12 days before.23:26
tinwhiskerslol23:26
bin_bashtinwhiskers: not necessarily. there could be a financial reward for getting the vaccine23:27
blkshpwhole year, but to be fair, i think i'll pass23:27
bin_bashalthough THAT would draw criticism23:27
de-factonot exactly, rewarding is giving a minority an advantage over average, discriminating is giving a minority a disadvantage relative to average23:27
bin_bashbecause the poor would be biased in selection23:27
tinwhiskerswhich would be discriminatory against those who didn't get it23:27
tinwhiskersreward is a form of discrimination23:27
bin_bashblkshp: omg that sucks. i was considering doing one here but the company wasnt succeeding. could've been me though23:27
bin_bashprobably smart to skip it though, those things are never thoroughly cleaned23:27
bin_bashplus i bet in the dark people take them off to eat or drink and stuff23:28
tinwhiskersbut I'm being pedantic. I agree with the reward thing, you just have to say "it's a reward" and it's all good.23:28
blkshpluckily, i get 50% off with work rewards so it's not too expensive and, frankly, people have lost a lot more than my £75 quid cinema ticket23:28
blkshpIt actually says you may take them off to eat. o.O23:29
BrainstormNew from CNBC Health: (news): Coronavirus live updates: Florida sheriff bans masks for deputies; Russia's vaccine could be out in November → https://is.gd/pU8kqk23:31
tinwhiskersOne thing that would be nice to see would be border restrictions eased for those who choose to vaccinate.23:31
blkshpThe film contagion had armbands for the vaccinated (and it dispursed them by how important the people were and random surname picking iirc) I wonder if that might happen (that was a US film of course)23:33
tinwhiskersYeah, I think too many people would get fake armbands and it would onerous to police.23:33
blkshptrue23:34
tinwhiskersbut at the border it's manageable.23:34
de-factohow about making the vaccination rare, so people feel lucky if they are able to get a shot? afaik in that film (Contagion) they made a lottery for the first vaccinations (ok maybe that goes too far, but the psychology is similar)23:35
tinwhiskersImagine needing to have police checkpoints to validate people's vaccination status.. ugh.23:35
tinwhiskersrestricting entry to schools is also manageable (further down the track) and large venues, maybe.23:36
blkshpsome automated scanning perhaps.23:36
tinwhiskersyes, perhaps, but but the time we can develop that we'll probably be out of the woods anyway23:37
de-factoyeah the famous RFID chips... hmm i think that would go too far and also ease discrimination23:37
tinwhiskersoh, I see23:37
tinwhiskersyeah, we could probably develop something like that pretty quickly.23:37
tinwhiskersBill Gates has that RFID tracking stuff already, right? /-)23:38
tinwhiskerserm :-/23:38
de-factohaha yeah thats where that meme comes from, well at least from his opponents23:38
blkshpA friend of mine works for HP and they have had to get a temperature check on entering the building.23:39
blkshpBut that's been there for yearsnow.23:39
tinwhiskerscool23:39
tinwhiskersumm hot23:39
tinwhiskersHopefully from this we'll develop a better "if you're sick stay home" work ethos instead of "come to work sick or you're fired" ethos.23:40
de-factoindeed23:40
de-factoi think it all will turn out to be just fine, yet about how we sailed to that goal will be a metric according to which our management of the pandemic will be judged in the aftermath of it23:47
LjLoptimist23:48
LjLi think the whole vaccine thing will be a huuuuge strange to our society as a uh, non-civil-warring body :P23:49
de-factoyep :)23:49
