ArsaneritTo oversimplify it: if everyone's infected but nobody is sick, then it's not a problem, is it?00:00
nixonixyeah, but how about kids not vaccinated, telomeres, left side brain regions, red blood cells etc? will they get permanent damage?00:00
nixonixwill those vaccinated get some permanent damage too, but just less? if its like 9-12 months since the 2nd dose?00:00

Brainstormnixonix: From www.fau.eu: Long-term changes to blood cells triggered by Covid-19 infection › Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg00:01
ArsaneritAren't kids very rare to get sick anyway?00:01
nixonixsome of those like telomeres seem to happen in mild cases too00:02
nixonixand not all the adults that arent going to get vaxed are actual antivaxes. they just have bought those lies by antivaxers. or are overly worried about rare adverse effects00:04
ArsaneritMy colleague doesn't want to get vaccinated yet, because he thinks the vaccines have been insufficiently tested, that it's too soon to know about long-term side effects.00:05
nixonixwhile i dont care too much what happens to adult antivaxers, its not the same for all adults that dont get vaxed. imo00:05
nixonixi saw a good counter argument for that recently. i try to locate it later. but anyways, 3B vaccinated, 1B or close with mrna (and viral vector vaccines are mrna vaccines too!). we know pretty close to enough about western vacc side effects00:06
nixonixjust some small details like myocarditis still left00:06
Arsaneritnixonix: he's worried about long term side effects specifically00:10
Arsanerithe calls it a giant experiment00:11
Arsanerithe's wrong, but he's not stupid00:11
nixonix"Where we really are concerned about side effects is especially right at the beginning there, and then typically where you see a problem, it will happen in the first couple of weeks, even with a brand new vaccine. I mean, when they're studying it, very, very, very rare to have anything coming after that time.00:12
nixonixAnd in fact, that's part of why the FDA wants the six months of monitoring because if you've monitored somebody for six months afterwards, really there's no biological reason that you would expect there to be any long-term concerns from the vaccine."00:13

BrainstormNew from ScienceMag: [Research Articles] Pan-caspase inhibition as a potential host-directed immunotherapy against MRSA and other bacterial skin infections: Staphylococcus aureus causes most skin infections in humans, and the emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains is a serious public health threat. joergprolly there's no compre3hensive paper since the study isn't finished yet, so we need to deal with interesting stuff like https://www.unimedizin-mainz.de/GCS/dashboard/#/app/pages/PersSituation/einkommen20:16
joergreally nice dashboard  https://www.unimedizin-mainz.de/GCS/dashboard/#/app/pages/Impfung/Impfbereitschaft . Even "dark mode" ;-D20:20
joergLjL: ^^^20:20
LjLinteresting joerg20:23
LjLthis doesn't quite match things i've read elsewhere "Self-assessment of overall constitution20:24
LjLSelf-assessment of the overall physical condition20:24

LjLComparison of current data with prior data from the population sample from the Gutenberg Health Study in 201920:24
LjLSummary: About 85% of the population sample rate their mental as well as physical health during the pandemic as good to very good. According to data from the 2019 Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) population sample, participants actually rate their physical condition as better during the pandemic; on average their mental condition has remained stable."20:24
LjLwhoops newlines20:24
LjLalso income didn't change for most people, i'm afraid those answers would be very different for Italy :(20:24
LjL(well, they are, i've seen polls about that...)20:24
LjLah this is all specifically on people from Rhine Hesse20:25
LjLthe "Corona Warn App Usage" page is quite impressive... in Italy we barely have 15% using it20:27
joergwatch out for nothing of this stuff is peer-reviewed yet aiui20:32

joergdang, can't find that evaluation of infection risk for a household with 3 adults vs 2 adults plus one pupil. It been very impressive that for 2+pupil household the risk was _lower_ than for 3 adults. However note that this been for a timespan where most pupils were in homeschooling20:42

de-factolast report it was R(B.1.617.2) ~ 1.322:11
de-factothis report i have not crunched the data yet22:12
de-factobut it looks like its beyond extrapolation22:12
joergsounds plausible. So maybe we will be at 1.3 in 4 weeks when B1.617.2 is at >90%22:12
LjLjoerg, i don't care much about peer review tbh, i think there have been some scientists too starting to voice that the process is a bit silly, or has shown itself to be with COVID... ultimately it's two random guys getting barely paid to give their opinion on a paper, and there was like some research that found if you gave a paper to *another* two peer reviewers, the "mark" they'd give it was pretty much uncorrelated with the "mark" the first reviewers gave22:13
LjLso i care if i can see some obvious shortcomings in the paper, and since i usually can't, i wait for the internet to comment about it, regardless of peer review :P22:13
joerg:-)22:14
joergit's a pity this silly football now works as catalyst for Delta, instead of them doing the right thing and adjusting measures to R_t with short notice22:17

theyscreweduslock us out. its dominant here22:51
theyscreweduss-gene positive 89% in metro area, prob dominant in whole the country22:52
theyscrewedussome of them may still be SA variant or something, but still22:52
theyscrewedusand not a word in media, or healthcare officials. they stopped reporting about variants couple months ago22:54
theyscrewedusi wish you luck, try not to make the same mistake we did. let us be the warning example, so theres something positive to remember, perhaps22:55

ArsaneritLjL: having been on both sides of the peer review process, I agree that there is a sense of arbitrariness, but the peer review process does improve a paper typically22:57
Arsaneritit filters out some of the biggest crap and usually reviewers have suggestions on how to improve the presentation22:57
lavadonuttheyscrewedus, finland?22:57
theyscrewedusyeah, where else22:57
lavadonutidk, what's wrong with finland?22:58
theyscrewedussmall contry with media secrecy. they knew for sure, but some things they just dont report to people22:58
theyscrewedusthey have a common discussion platform for editors and journalists, where they decide the strategies. it was originally meant for officials giving information to media in crisis situations, but its been used for media to decide the policy of reporting things22:59
theyscrewedusused by media23:00
LjLmedia secrecy? in finland? one of the top-ranking countries for media freedom in the world?23:00
theyscrewedusits freedom for media, that finland gets those high rankings. not freedom for public23:00
theyscrewedusprob dominant in norway too, despite much stricter border restrictions with mandatory quarantines. why else they opened the borders now23:04
theyscrewedusits mostly spreading among 18-30 yo now. they are the less vaccinated. maybe soon half of them have got the 1st dose, which gives around 50% protection for infection, cuttin the R to half23:05
theyscrewedusbut maybe less, when they probably are more often in situtations with high viral dose23:05
BrainstormNew from CIDRAP: WHO: World at perilous point in the pandemic: Lisa Schnirring | News Editor | CIDRAP News Jul 07, 2021 WHO officials said variant spread could outpace vaccines, even in countries with high vaccine coverage. → https://is.gd/MRuege23:06
theyscrewedusif half of them have R cut to half, that would mean 25% reduction. so it helps somewhat, lets see if it keeps stable or rises23:06
theyscrewedusits now almost triple to mid june low point, and at may level roughly. but better vacc coverage23:07
theyscrewedusi just saw the first health official mentioning of the next wave in the fall23:08
theyscrewedusyear ago some of them said, the second wave may never come23:08
theyscrewedusso theres some improvement23:08
theyscrewedustry to find out the shares s-gene positives for your countries. as almost nobody does representative sequencing, there youll get the answer whats the prevalence of indian variant23:10
theyscrewedusalthough the share of SA or P.1 variants vary by country a bit, also s-gene positives23:11
nixonixdominant in dk, although partial week stats https://www.covid19genomics.dk/statistics23:14
de-factoyeah .dk pretty much is a bit behind .de23:18
