Trippy72894this study says natural immunity is better than vaccines https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.08.24.21262415v1.full.pdf. my friend over a year ago suggested temporarily isolating the vulnerable and letting everyone else get it and recover with better immunity. would that have been a good02:04
Trippy72894strategy?02:04
LjLno, ans also that study is not without challenge02:05
Trippy72894what are the main points the challengers make?02:06
Trippy72894or url me if you like02:06
Trippy72894and hello to you, by the way02:06
ublxsomething like 50% of people in Wuhan who were infected are still showing symptoms of long covid more than a year later02:08
Trippy72894wow. ok that's a good challenge.02:09
LjLthere are just other studies that suggest otherwise, without that study having strikingly more conclusive evidence. but i'm not feeling very well and not about to embark in a search right now. anyway aside from whether natural immunity is better or worse than vaccines, you should also consider 1) what the implications of having had COVID might be, including known and possible forms of long COVID and organ damage, and 2) whether it would have been feasible to02:09
LjL"isolate the vulnerable" out of sending them to Mars, because places like nursing homes have been more like slaughter houses the moment someone brought in COVID, and someone inevitably would, even with being careful02:09
Trippy72894LjL excellent points. sorry you're not well. get well soon.02:10

LjLlastshell: I really can't say whether it's safe for an individual to mix vaccines like that, that's for a doctor to say. But I can point out that if I'm not mistaken, J&J uses the same adenovirus as one of the two Sputnik shots, so in principle interaction can happen (such as lack of efficacy because the adenovirus gets recognized and destroyed by the immune system before the vaccine can act)18:48

LjLspecing: well, it uses two different ones in the two shots, so the idea was even if you were immune to one, at least the other would likely be effective. AZ took the alternative approach of using a non-human adenovirus that we normally aren't immune to. J&J seems to have taken the "who cares, we'll say our vaccine work after only one shot and that'll be our way of carving a market niche" approach18:55
LjLAnyway AZ uses the same one in both shots, so even if it's reasonable to assume we aren't immune at first, we may be at the time of the second shot. So I'm not sure the criticism of Sputnik is justified vs AZ18:56

Variation across the five age bands studied ranged between just 90% and 92.7%." ← i think i remember reading comments that this was statistically extremely unlikely. also, you know how Russia's deaths were consistently below 800 for a while, in a very blatant way? well... if that's their MO, i don't feel i would trust them myself20:25
gustikin other countries however ... they took either Sputnik or chinese vaccines according to whom are those governments affine to20:25
LjLand even if Brazil's claim that "their" Sputnik contained live, replicating virus was not checked/replicated, it says "Slovakia also said it had concerns, claiming that Sputnik doses delivered to the country didn’t match those supplied elsewhere, but decided to approve the vaccine anyway" so other countries are also unsure of the *consistency* of the vaccine among batches, which i'd say is a big concern20:26
gustikwell, Slovakia calling here20:26
gustikthere were no "concerns" ... it was a political game ... after Matovic (I call him Psychopatovic) ordered the vaccines from Russia, all mainstream media went bonkers and to quiet the FUD propaganda they decided they will do an examination of the vaccine ... but of course they had no laboratory to do this, and the slovak agency said only EMA can do this. In the end they took the approval from the hungarian authority (they needed20:28
gustikat least one approval from ANY EU country)20:28
BrainstormNew from r/WorldNews: worldnews: Risk of death more than 130% higher with delta variant than original COVID virus, research suggests → https://is.gd/mLxtyA20:30
BrainstormUpdates for Qatar: +58 cases (now 237048), +5811 tests (now 2.7 million) since a day ago20:31
gustikand to that previous point where there is stated that vaccines have an efficacy of >90% ... I do not know if I should take that as a joke now or not since we already see higher numbers of PCR tests this month than we seen in 2020, even though in 2020 there was much more testing going on (vaccinated do not need to test)20:31
de-factoindeed it looks like EMA is waiting for some data they say20:31
gustikEMA first said they did not receive any application for approval ... then the russians send an application and since then it is sitting idle20:32
de-factoits listed there though https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/human-regulatory/overview/public-health-threats/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/treatments-vaccines/covid-19-vaccines20:32

de-factohttps://www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/ema-starts-rolling-review-sputnik-v-covid-19-vaccine20:33
gustikwhile Pfizer/BioNTech, J&J and AstraZeneca were approved as emergency (without all necessary data)20:33
de-factointerestingly as is Sinovac20:34
gustikwell, the rolling review will take as long as there are no 80% vaccinated EU wide by Pfizer vaccines20:34
de-factohttps://www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/ema-starts-rolling-review-covid-19-vaccine-vero-cell-inactivated20:34
gustikbut no matter, here in Slovakia you can get SputnikV20:34
gustikand you can get SputnikV OR Sinovac in Hungary20:35
gustikthe problem with it is, that SOME countries MAY NOT accept a COVID-PASS that includes a vaccination from these vaccines20:35
gustikso basically you can get the vaccine without problems, the question is if you be able to use that for travel20:36
specingafaik hungary only vaccinates hungarian nationals20:36
gustikBS20:37
specingI know that Serbia vaccinates everyone20:37
gustikppl were travelling en-masse to Hungary to get the shot, because they were faster than Slovakia for example20:37
specinggustik: The hungarian vaccination signup form requires you to enter a hungarian ID20:37
specingor at least, did when I last checked20:37

Brainstormde-facto: From www.medrxiv.org: Vaccine Effectiveness against Referral to Hospital and Severe Lung Injury Associated with COVID-19: A Population-Based Case-Control Study in St. Petersburg, Russia | medRxiv20:37
gustikwell, maybe they have that new, but when it started ppl were travelling there20:37
specingdoubt it20:38
specingnever heard of travel to Hungary20:38
gustikand then hungarians have also some IDs for foreign hungarians that works for some20:38
specingonly heard of vaccine travel to  Serbia20:38
gustikWELL ... that's an invalid argument20:38
gustikI am here and I heard about it, and frankly I do not care if New York Times reported on it20:38
LjLif you have a country's ID you are at least a resident. that's not the same as being a national, but you definitely can't just travel there quickly and get an ID20:39
gustikno20:39

gustikhowever, that is not a problem any more ... there are now shelves full of vaccines in any country and no one is getting it, that's why they are now shipping the remaining vaccines to Africa mainly Kenya and so on20:44
de-factonot really, there are still many countries that urgently need more supply, e.g. African countries etc20:45
de-factowe are lucky that we *now* got enough supply in Europe20:45
gustikyes, they are shipping it now to Africa, like I said20:46
de-factohttps://ourworldindata.org/grapher/share-people-vaccinated-covid?tab=map20:49
gustikthe problem now is that produced vaccines need to be injected or thrown out after they reach their date of expiration, so they need to ship it somewhere where there is demand in order not having to throw them out20:50
gustikthat map is funny btw20:53
gustikthe least vaccinated populations are in Africa20:53
de-factothats why i posted it20:55
de-factoand btw countries with very high vaccination rates do really well right now, e.g. Portugal and Spain20:56
gustikyes20:57
gustikPortugal and Spain are those countries which decided (because of the high vaccination rates) not to required CovidPasses from ppl (of course there were ppl protesting against this, that helped too)20:58
gustikbut lets look at https://covid19.who.int/ the % change in last 7 days20:59
gustikVysegrad countries + Ukraine is red there ... and low vaccination rates in Africa are inconclusive in effect21:01
BrainstormNew from r/WorldNews: worldnews: Covid cases in Japan have mysteriously plummeted, and scientists have a few theories about why → https://is.gd/xqHJtG21:03
gustikAlso Canada vs. USA is the exact opposite from what ppl in favour of vaccination would expect21:03
LjL"Another school of thought is that the virus comes in vicious cycles, fuelled by one particular age demographic." ← de-facto's school (from that Japan article)21:04
de-factoyeah imho it makes sense that reproduction number = contact_rate * transmissibility * duration_of_infectiousness depends on how densely connected a social network is and thereby on what (age, social) cohort is observed21:09
de-factoall epidemic dynamic is a function of age group as internal interaction inside a specific age group is more than cross-age group interaction, also depending on health parameters and lifestyle etc pp21:11
gustikyes, you actually said that there is no pandemic because of course - the sick ppl die ... the healthy ppl don't need any help getting by, lifestyle too, VitaminD levels and all the rest21:16
gustikbtw. speaking of Vitamin D21:16
gustikI have now news that here in Slovakia some companies are giving out Vitamin D3 to employees, and tea and so on21:16
gustikI am reading that as a way to make sure ... since no one here believes in vaccines any more ... since they didn't end the pandemic ... that alternative solutions might be worth a try21:17
de-factoi did not say that there is no pandemic, i said it has to be viewed by age group21:20
de-factobtw i bought our emeritus prof a pack of vitamin D3 today, he is over 80 years old and tripple vaccinated yet still did not take any D3 yet (but planned to)21:20
gustiksee21:21
de-factoif felt really good to give to him, because it will help him, especially at his age21:21
gustikI see that the biggest problem in the near future will be missing personnel in hospitals ... here in Slovakia there seems to be a severe shortage already21:24
de-factoyes in hospitals its the personnel that is the most difficult to upgrade, equipment can be produced industrially, personnel has to be trained and that takes a lot of time21:28
gustikand they did nothing in order to fix that problem for the past 2+ years21:28
gustikso that makes politicians the real covid-deniers21:29
gustikin order to prepare for the 3rd wave in the state hospital of Zilina they prepared 40 COVID ICU beds ... yes, forty !21:29
gustikunsurprisingly, they are full already ... and we are just beginning21:30

de-factolooks like very *low* infection incidence in those countries with quite high vaccination rate23:31
LjLwow, Spain and Portugal are a *lot* higher than Italy and France in amount of people *fully* vaccinated (which matters the most with Delta)23:35
LjLhttps://ourworldindata.org/explorers/coronavirus-data-explorer?zoomToSelection=true&facet=none&pickerSort=asc&pickerMetric=location&Metric=People+fully+vaccinated&Interval=Cumulative&Relative+to+Population=true&Align+outbreaks=false&country=ITA~GBR~ESP~PRT~FRA23:35

See https://offloop.net/covid19/?default=Spain23:38
LjLsee though? these still have them as higher than italy, but with different numbers23:39
de-factoand next week testing has to be paid and no quarantine financial support, expect all sort of weirdness coming23:39
LjLand yet both OWID and my data (Covidly) should be using total population as the denominator23:39
LjL(Il Sole 24 Ore gives different data, but it uses *eligible* people)23:39
de-factoyou can compare percentages (Italy 7.8% vs Spain/Portugal 10.5%)23:40
LjLde-facto, i'm looking at vaccines, not cases23:46
de-factoor even better fatality rates: Italy 7.8% * 2.8% = 0.22% with Spain/Portugal 10.5% * 1.7% = 0.18%23:46
LjLfully vaccinated in particular are much higher in Portugal, and to a lesser extent Spain, than Italy, which in turn is better than Germany (but similar to France and the UK)23:46
LjLthe differences are lesser when you just count doses/people23:47
ArsaneritI wonder how complete the reporting is.23:47
de-factowell for fatalities one would have to compare 100% - ${vaxpercentage}23:47
ArsaneritI mean how complete vaccinations are reported.23:48
de-factoNon-Vaccinated: Italy 100% - 68.25% = 31,75% vs 100% - 78.61% = 21,39%, Portugal > 100% - 85.21% = 14,79% of populations23:51
LjLArsanerit, afaik for italy the reporting is fairly timely and complete, you go into the central system as soon as you get your shot23:59
