dTalLjL, the thread you pinged me over with the office all wearing respirators20:25
de-factoLjL,  interestingly such symptoms were also mentioned in an article that speculates about that the Russian Flu was a coronavirus that induced something like long-COVID depression20:27
de-factohttps://www-spektrum-de.translate.goog/news/russische-grippe-ausgeloest-durch-ein-coronavirus/1998340?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp20:27
LjLdTal, ah right20:27
LjLdTal, i don't know many people, but i certainly hear of more people having covid than... ever20:28
de-facto""The lack of concentration, the depression and anxiety are very reminiscent of what is now called long Covid symptoms," says Harald Brüssow. None of this is proof that the Russian flu was caused by OC43 – and it will be difficult to find it."20:28
de-facto"Another unknown today is Long Covid. "We know from historical records that survivors of the Russian flu often had to deal with psychological consequences," says Jütte. "At the time, people were talking about post-influenza depression." The "Parsons Report" states that such symptoms occurred in 9 percent of those who had previously been ill."20:29
LjLde-facto, uh, this article... talks about "The memory of the last pandemic" in 1889. surely the last influenza pandemic was the Spanish flu?20:29
dTalaccording to much-less-prominent goovernment statistics, 1 in 20 people had covid last week20:29
de-factoLjL, no they speculate about that the Russian Flu may have shown a spectrum of symptoms consistent with a zoonotic spill over event, possibly OC43 CoV20:32
LjLi can see that, but calling it "the last pandemic" is just wrong20:32
BrainstormNew from COVID on Twitter: Tulio de Oliveira (@Tuliodna): Let's retweet this with a big change of regulation today! de-factoand that there were symptoms similar to what we now call long-COVID20:33
LjLuhm also "Similarly, OC43, along with another human coronavirus (229E), causes about 30 percent of seasonal colds" ← as far as i know, coronaviruses causes a minority of colds, the majority being rhinoviruses20:34
de-factonote they did not isolate any RNA, hence speculate, but if it was OC43 it would have changed a lot in the timespan20:35
LjL"With regard to the long-term consequences of the virus infection, however, the current pandemic looks better than it did then. The majority of people are vaccinated - and current studies suggest that the risk of long Covid is massively reduced or even disappears completely." ← no they don't...20:36
LjLthe analogy is interesting20:36
LjLand suggestive20:37
LjLbut the article is a bit wrong in places20:37
LjLi'm surprised by how decent the english is, i almost wouldn't notice it's a machine translation20:37
de-factoits quite speculative, but could be interesting in the context of how long it took for that "Russian Influanza" to calm down and what outcomes it had for people20:37
de-factohmm from that Forbes article20:39
de-facto"For a vast majority of people, the regenerative properties of the olfactory bulb restores the sense of smell within a few weeks or months. What about the rest of the brain? Damage to brain cells cannot be reversed. When tissues die, cerebrospinal fluid and other biomolecules fill the excess space to maintain the integrity of the brain."20:39
de-facto"Perhaps, this explains why neurological complications associated with long-haul Covid-19 show little improvement over time. Years of additional research are needed before the consequences of losing so much gray matter are fully understood. Identifying these changes now will help us to better support and treat what will be a growing class of people with cognitive impairments."20:39
LjLa growing class = virtually everyone20:40
de-factoshall we say "lovely" that this meme finally finds a more popular stage for getting more widely discussed?20:40
LjLi think there have been articles like this before, and this study is not new20:40
LjLpeople are just out of caring20:40
