Tuvixde-facto: Indeed, the "5 days" nonsense is so bad to be almost hilariously optimistic. Last rapid-test (at-home antigen) positive I had was still showing a faint line at 10 days past initial symptoms (and 12 days past the likely exposure.) And RATs are less sensitive than PCR, but any line probably means that I could have still spread it.21:47
de-factoOh so you had it toom when?21:48
TuvixLikely picked it up at a close-quarters indoor event first week this month, probably BA.5 but since we don't sequence (and don't really PCR at all anymore generally speaking) I'm just going on what was around at the time.21:49
de-factoyeah thats what i assume i got too21:50
TuvixI know people who don't even want to take a RAT (even if they have spares still from the free ones the gov't gave out some months back) because our employers often don't pay you for time off.21:50
de-factoHow did it go for you and how are you now?21:50
TuvixI mean, some have policies that you get "up to 5 unpaid days off" or something, but if they won't pay the staff to isolate, why would they even bother to test?21:50
BrainstormNew from CIDRAP: COVID booster adds substantial protection against Omicron hospitalization: Mary Van Beusekom | News Writer | CIDRAP News Sep 26, 2022 Three doses of an mRNA vaccine were tied to a 59% lower odds of hospital care than 2 doses. → https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2022/09/covid-booster-adds-substantial-protection-against-omicron-hospitalization21:50
TuvixIt's a peverse incentive here to *not* test… and thus infect more. Great plan no? :\21:51
de-factoLol thats crazy21:51
de-factoCorrection: insanity21:51
TuvixI was pretty unhappy for 2 days or so; I didn't have work then, but if I did the 1st day would probably have been a proper day-off for me. Day 2 through recovery was okay, just a sore throat and a bit less than ideal. 3x Pfizer here, and now I won't schedule my 4th until infection + 3 months per the best recommendation I can find.21:52
TuvixAnd that timing is fine, given that'll be early-December, and we still have several good months of cold/winter weather here for the protection that'll provide for the *next* exciting varients we'll be seeing then.21:52
de-factohow long did it take for you from first symptoms or pos test?21:54
TuvixI got symptoms about 2 days after the club I assume I got exposed at, and tested about 24 hours after that.21:54
de-factoI mean the disease/recovery21:55
TuvixOh, 12 days past infection for the last RAT I took to have the most faint of lines (I never bothered with a follow-up, just avoided going anywhere another few days.)21:56
de-factoYou were sick for almost two weeks?21:56
TuvixI only felt really off about 2 or 3 days (day 1 was not fun, the rest was "just" a cough mostly.) But the RAT at infection + 12 days was still every-so-slightly showing positive, yea.21:57
TuvixI just assume if the line is remotely visible on a RAT that I'm probably still able to infect others.21:57
de-factoI mean symptoms, how lobg did they last from first sign of disease?21:58
TuvixOh, about a week maybe? The cough went away after about 7 or 8 days and was less of a problem near the end of that.21:58
de-factoOof so that week is then ahead fir me still21:59
TuvixI mean, everyone has a slightly different experience too.21:59
de-factoAnd now, are you feeling fine again?22:00
TuvixYea, been fine for a couple weeks now.22:00
de-factoGlad to hear that :)22:00
TuvixI felt quite decent at that 2-week point too, but the RAT still detected enough to "barely" show positive.22:00
TuvixI just put off my grocery shopping and went deeper in the supply of dry food I have. I've got plenty of food, just not the "fun" stuff to make ;)22:01
de-factoYeah i also prepped, probably would be able to live for months without shopping22:02
de-factoTuvux anything you found out that you did not know before?22:03
TuvixEven pre-pandemic I tended to keep bulk goods for more than I really needed. I'd just buy when there was a good sale so long as the expiration was good to add at the end of my rotation.22:03
* de-facto cant type on touchscreens22:03
TuvixNew information? Not really. I knew that positive (RAT and/or PCR) at >=10 days isn't uncommon even if not the majority, at least for Delta (Omicron is of course still "new" here.) Minor chills, low-grade fever, & cough for 1 to 2 weeks was about what I expected honestly.22:04
TuvixErm, the cought is all I had past symptoms + 24 hours. Chills/fever was just a day-of-symptoms thing.22:04
TuvixI suppose I ought to get my seasonal influenza vaccine earlier than Dec; based on the southern-winter that's wrapping up, flu seems to be predicted possibly worse than average this year.22:07
BrainstormUpdates for France: +76878 cases, +73 deaths since 2 days ago — San Marino: +25 cases since 2 days ago — Papua New Guinea: +22 cases since 2 days ago — Eswatini: +11 cases since 7 days ago22:07
de-factoYeah i hope it will behave for me too, wish me luck :p22:08
TuvixThe problem is here no one cares to test, the RATs are no longer freely shipped to your home (gov't ran out of money to support it and didn't allocate more for that program) and even if communities (like mine) offer free ones, they're not "easy" to get to physically or limit you to 1 per visit if you express a "need" for one.22:09
de-factoYeah i had to pay 10 euro for an official RAT at station22:10
de-factoStuuuupid22:10
TuvixWhy would the average worker _pay_ for a test, and then be told that their company policy is they are now required to take 5 _unpaid_ days off (but hey, at least they won't be fired for it.)22:10
de-factoMany people just wont bother to test anymore22:11
TuvixInstead workers intentionally don't test so they don't have to take a hit on pay, which some can't aford if they aren't well-paid to begin.22:11
de-factoSo the ifficial numbers are garbage niw22:11
de-factoAt least the PCR was free after a22:12
de-factopos RAT22:12
TuvixI mean, I didn't get a PCR, so my test isn't in any official numbers either. I even tried to use the state-app that's intended to track exposure, but it only works if you have some agency report it for you. So that system's a joke too here.22:12
de-factoI just wanted it officially documentrd and also agreed that they register me with name etc22:13
TuvixYea, then it's at least in your clinic records, and maybe some percentage of those PCRs get sequenced for varient-tracking too.22:13
de-factoSo i guess i am in a minority now appearing in the official stats22:14
TuvixI mean, I had 2 RATs show positive, different brands & production dates at that, so I'm sure I had it. A PCR wouldn't have told me anything I didn't know.22:14
de-facto96% BA.5.x22:14
de-factoSo i am pretty sure thats what i git too then22:15
TuvixBA.4.6 is a slim possibility for me, but BA.5.x is likely for me too.22:15
Tuvixhttps://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#variant-proportions22:15
de-factosorry for the bad typing, my thumbs are just too big for touchscreens22:17
TuvixThankfully both the vaccines & exposure all seem to have some degree of cross-varient protection; that may not prevent re-infection (in fact, it's quite likely not to do much for that) but should reduce any future symptom severity I have.22:17
de-factoyes hopefully22:18
TuvixHopefully that also means less chance of spreading it on, especially if I don't even realize symptoms. I worry more for people with compromised immune systems than forme.22:18
de-factoyet at some point those will be the most prevalent conditions against which a variant would have to spread in a population, so we will see i guess22:18
de-factobut i also hope to be preparing for the winter right now with the BA.5 infection22:18
TuvixYea, we'll have to see what winter brings. That BA.4.6 rise in the US has been curious. It hasn't exactly swept to a top position, but it's slowly displacaing BA.5 for percentages.22:20
de-factoi guess that means i wont need a vaccination the next few months though, allowing my immune system to optimize its response from what it hopefully learns right now22:22
TuvixThat's the takeaway I've heard from the medical community too; they say if you had a positive case, 3-months out is the ideal vaccination time (but they also generally suggest not waiting if you're eligible for a booster but not recently infected since it's too hard to "time" that reliably.)22:24
de-factomy third Moderna was 9 1/2 months ago, dec 202122:24
TuvixThe reality is that COVID is *not* a seasonal virus; it's quite happy to spread during the warm months too.22:25
TuvixYea, Nov 2021 for me. I was debating when to get my 4th Pfizer (ie: "2nd booster") when I caught the live one. That's one way for a boost, I suppose..22:26
de-factowell all respiratoy viruses have some seasonality to them, because their transmission paths are subject to seasonal effects such as staying indoors in the winter, less air exchange etc22:26
TuvixTrue, it just doesn't show as much especially for the US numbers where we've done a worse-than-average job of containing it. Like staying home when sick, and so on.22:26
TuvixLast summer's Delta wave hit the US mid-summer, just as our numbers were recovering and until then starting to look decent.22:27
de-factowell yes but would that have potentially have been 40% faster growing in the winter?22:28
TuvixMaybe? Omicron did hit at the fall/winter time here, although it's hard to compare since it also is easier to transmit.22:28
de-factoand also immunologic parameters for the average susceptible are time dependent22:29
TuvixBeing indoors more obviously doesn't help, but with businesses (and people in general) largely not bothering with masks anymore, any movement of people opens the door for exposure.22:29
de-factoe.g. the BA.5 wave depends on the BA.2 wave before etc22:29
TuvixThat too; there've been plenty of documented cases of getting back-to-back infections with a full recovery, just weeks apart.22:30
Tuvix(different VoC's there)22:30
de-factoyep22:31
TuvixToo many people don't appreciate science for all its impercise nature. Getting infected (or vaccinated) isn't some magic shield.22:32

TuvixLjL: Yea, I was eligible and had I rushed for it maybe I could have gotten it before my positive-case earlier this month, but like you I wasn't in a hurry either.23:49
TuvixIn a way I was maybe thinking about the ideal protection over winter, but realistically I simply didn't jump at the chance the week or 2 it was offered to the under-50's here. And I'm not in a high-risk category either. My case wasn't severe by any means, so ultimately my prior protection did its job.23:50
