c0rneliusDebian and Ubuntu can both debootstrap Devuan just fine. You just need to install: devuan-keyring_2017.10.03_all.deb; and create the needed /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts links manually.00:04
rrq.. and remember to use --no-merged-usr of course, if debian's still offer that00:07
c0rneliusI never use that. Could be a thing... I don't know.00:08
rrqc0rnelius: have you compared the scripting to make sure? or is it a "seems to be fine" thingy?00:09
c0rneliusI'm saying. Seems to be fine not doing that.00:09
c0rneliusI have two builders that have Devuan as an option and I've never run into a problem there.00:10
c0rneliusPersonally I don't understand why Devuan has an exclusive debootstrap. Makes you take extra steps if using the OS as a build host for anything but Devuan and is not really needed from what I can tell.00:13
gnarfaceit at least used to be that debian refused to add devuan releases as valid to their version (despite already having ubuntu and several others)00:14
gnarfacei dunno if or when that got fixed, but it's come up a few times before00:15
gnarfacei wouldn't be surprised if the version of debian corresponding to ascii still doesn't have the fix00:15
c0rneliusdebian and ubuntu I don't think have chimaera or anything above it.  but its pretty simple to just symlink of sid. which honestly most of those scripts options are.00:16
c0rneliusoff sid*00:16
gnarfacethat said, i'm pretty sure this jason1236 is just a griefer and whatever solution you provide he'll ultimately refuse00:17
c0rneliuswell I won't provide then :)00:17
c0rneliusI was just talking since it came up.00:18
c0rneliusseemed to build fine to me: 87956 -rw-r--r-- 1 root    root     90062240 Mar 31 18:25 devuan-ascii-rootfs-armel.tar.xz00:28
c0rneliusnot sure why anyone would want to run that old beast though.00:29
jason1236gnarface: a lot of people believe to be good programmers, but they are not. you can fix your script (debian works fine, with debootstrap).00:35
jason1236I just installed stable armel on pandora, of debian. I will try with stable to see how it does fetch devuan (out of debian stable armel, from pandora).00:37
onefangI've been experimenting with mmdebstrap instead of debootstrap for the last week.  One of it's features is the ability to create a system for some architecture that isn't the one you are running on.  I've not tested that part yet.  And I DO get an unmerged usr system with no effort when building a chimaera system.  Much to my annoyance, I wanted to try the merged version this time, but at least there's01:28
onefang a script for doing that.01:28
c0rneliusyou mean debootstrap armel using say aarch64 system?01:31
bb|hcbdebootstrap armel on an aarch64 is seamless under Devuan...03:47
steevonefang: debootstrap handles that too05:55
steevthat being alternative arches05:56
onefangmmdebstrap lies then, it says that's one of it's differences.  lol06:04
onefangI'm not using it for that though anyway.06:04
onefangAh "can setup foreign architecture chroots using qemu-user".  Not sure how debootstrap does that, never tried it.  I'll get to trying it eventually.06:06
rrqpossibly the difference is more in that mmdebstrap uses apt to resolve dependencies whereas (I think) debootstrap has its own06:10
onefangThat's one of the listed differences.06:11
rrqyeah .. probably good cross-pollination between them; it's not a competition06:12
onefangI'm currently changing my usual Devuan install script from debootstrap to mmdebstrap, to test it, and coz I need to update it to Chimaera.06:13
onefangSo far so good.06:13
onefangLater I'll adapt it to build Devuan build bot VMs, then I'll need to mess with different archs, including ARM.06:14
rrqre armel, some year ago I had a hard time finding a true armel emulation with qemu; one with a kernel option only "versatilepb" wirh "arm926", using 4.19.0-versatile ... that one sported 256M ram only so needed some creativity06:16
onefangMy desktop has 256 GB RAM, no creativity needed.  B-)06:39
steevonefang: old(er?) versions of debootstrap couldn't handle it, but at some point, that went away, and it can do it now16:44
