Centurion_Dano/04:36
Centurion_Danjust a heads up.  I'm upgrading my ppc64el to Chimaera04:37
redrickadam_free2air: Do I have the honour of addressing Adam Burns?  If so, I have done further checking about Mailman 2.1 prospects.  In short, Debian LTS cannot help.  More if/when you're around.06:53
onefangWhat are you doing with Mailman?06:56
redrickSeeing whether 2.1.x is still feasable on Beowulf, for the project's use.06:57
redrickMy turn.  ;->  What, you know something on that?06:58
onefangI saw mention of "get it to work with this, that, and the other thing".  Trying to do a whole mail server?  That's why I use courier, it has the lot.06:58
redrickThere's an ongoing project having to do with hosting for Devuan Project's mailing lists.  Do you follow the weekly planning meetings?07:01
onefangYep.  Courier has mailing list server to, though I've not tried that.07:01
redrickIf you follow the weekly planning meetings, I'm a little confused about this series of questions.07:02
onefangThink I suggested Devuan hosted mailing lists in the first place.  To get around the single bus factor we have with Dyne hosting them.07:03
onefang"knitting together the dodgy bits of Mailman + Postfix + Apache config" is what was said in the last minutes.  Made me think "might be easier to just use a whole system like Courier, which does the lot mail server wise, not dodgy bits that need knitting together".07:04
redrickCurrently, we're at the step of feasibility-testing legacy Mailman.  If not that, we'll discuss alternatives.  But yes, I've heard of courier-mlm.07:05
redrickI didn't elaborate on the Apache+Mailman+Postfix integration.  That's bog-standard stuff, that I deferred because the other problem was more pressing and a potential showstopper for packaged 2.1.x.  But stuff I've done in the past many times.07:09
adam_free2airredrick: hi. drats. now my cover is blown! ;) what's your beef (or vegan alternative) with Debian LTS vis a vis Mailman 2?08:37
redrickHi, glad you're up -- though in my timezone, I'm soon heading to bed.  AFAIK, Debian LTS doesn't do Debian 10 buster, and will not for over a year more.  Their latest Mailman 2.x package for 9.x stretch is 2.1.18-2+deb8u2, which is less good than what the buster main repo provides.09:11
redrickI basically am not finding a repo package in Beowulf-compatible .deb format from anywhere.09:13
redrickSo, getting that without building a local package seems unpromising.  Also, there's the separate problem, relevant to MoinMoin as well, that Python 2.x will not even be in Debian 11 bullseye at all.  Final upstream was Python 2.7.19 on 2020-04-40.  They say that's the end.09:17
redrickEr., Python 2.7.18, sorry, typo.09:17
redrickAFK.  Talk to you after sleep, I expect.09:20
masonredrick: Yeah, LTS will take over for Buster once Debian stops their oldstable-level of support for it. This is expected. The big question is whether Mailman is one of the packages they'll be willing to maintain at that point. We wouldn't need to consume what they've got before then.18:59
masononefang isn't here, but I used to run bits of Courier and it was a good experience, but I've never run their mailing list mannager. I'd wholeheartedly support exploring it.19:00
masonThere's still Majordomo, but it's a bit long in the tooth at this point and while I used to use it happily, it feels awkward lately. My relationship with RT is the same, and I recently ditched the instance I set up a couple years ago. I've been polluted by new things.19:01
adam_free2airnot sure even brent chapman is still running majordomo ...21:41
masonSome of the Slackware folks still run it.21:46
adam_free2airhave they been asleep for 21 years since the last release?21:47
masonSlackware has a strong culture of "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" :P21:47
adam_free2airheh. agreed. :) not necessarily a good reason for a new fresh install of basically abandonware tho ... home server mycroft.greatcircle.com is down atm.21:49
