DRWhiteHi folks, I'm iun need of a little assistance as nothing I do is working to install this stuff03:38
DRWhiteDoes anyone know how to install the NVIDIA drivers?03:39
DRWhitethe drivers keep saying I need to install the hernel source and headers and all, but I have, and it just can't find them.03:42
DRWhiteIs there something wrong with the repository?03:42
fsmithredDRWhite, there are good directions at debian wiki04:02
DRWhitelooked there, they don't work04:03
DRWhitei am about to switch back to WinBlows if I can't get my monitors working04:04
golinuxDRWhite: Have a look at https://smxi.org/site/faqs-sgfxi.htm  Hope you have good eyes.  LOL!04:07
golinuxI don't have a video card anymore but when I did I relied on that script.04:08
DRWhiteI already have the headers installed.04:08
DRWhiteI have even manually targeted04:08
DRWhiteI have spent the past 5 hours trying to get this working04:08
fsmithredare you trying to install the binary from nvidia or the packages from repo?04:09
gnarfaceusually what happens is you first go to nvidia.com and use their shell installer script, then it messes with your system in ways that makes it no longer compatible with the debian packages04:09
DRWhiteI have installed everything from the REPO that it has asked for so far04:10
DRWhiteI have installed the linux-headers04:10
DRWhiteIt keeps asking me for the headers04:10
DRWhiteI directly specify where the headers are04:10
DRWhiteand it still fails04:10
DRWhiteit keeps asking for the headers04:10
fsmithredaren't there pre-compiled binaries in the repo?04:10
DRWhiteno04:10
fsmithredis build-essential installed?04:11
DRWhiteyes04:11
fsmithredsorry, it's been years since I've used the nvidia drivers04:12
fsmithredI thought they had it down to installing two packages04:12
DRWhitenot in Devuan04:13
fsmithredin debian04:13
fsmithredwhich would be the same in devuan04:13
DRWhiteThis is Devuan, not Debian.04:13
fsmithredunless video drivers now depend on the init system04:13
gnarfacethey didn't when i updated ceres yesterday anyway04:13
fsmithredyeah, I know what this is. devuan is about 95-99% debian04:14
DRWhiteno they don't seem to be. The driver just keeps wanting the kernel headers04:14
DRWhiteYup, but no SystemShittyD04:14
DRWhiteWould Neuvau work instead of NVIDIA?04:15
fsmithredyeah, I use nouveau04:15
fsmithredit works04:15
fsmithredI can even have two monitors04:15
DRWhiteHow can I find out if Neuvau is installed correctly?04:16
fsmithredxserver-xorg-video-nouveau04:16
fsmithredis probably already installed04:16
DRWhiteBecause on my GPU, I have the DVI, but not the HDMI04:16
DRWhiteYes it is installed, but how do I know if it's installed properly?04:17
fsmithredI don't know. Never had to do that.04:17
fsmithredand I do a lot of installs.04:17
DRWhiteI installed on this PC. But my main monitor jsut doesn't come up04:18
DRWhiteTrying to install the drivers so that I know that it's going to work.04:18
DRWhiteIf you know how to get a second monitor up on Neu, then I'm all ears.04:18
fsmithredrun lxrandr04:19
fsmithredassuming you can get to a desktop04:19
fsmithredif not, you get to play with xrandr in console04:19
DRWhiteI have desktop, bbut I still use xrandr to change my resolution and alter many things for the display.04:20
DRWhiteI'm not new to linux, and I've never had this issue before.04:20
DRWhiteI can plug in my other linux drive from my laptop and it all works.04:21
fsmithredyou have nothing on screen, or you have a plain cosole with a command prompt?04:21
DRWhiteBut this isntallation on here, it's not working04:21
DRWhiteOne screen, full GUI. That is "Screen 0". I want to get my other screen now.04:22
fsmithredit can be done with nouveau. Are you running xfce? Or some other desktop?04:24
DRWhiteI have unplugged it and plugged it in hoping that it would just finally recognise it.04:24
DRWhitexfce, I don't need the super wanky shit04:24
DRWhite I like simple04:24
fsmithredif the standard display settings in xfce don't let you configure a second monitor, install lxrandr and use that.04:24
DRWhitelxrandr is better?04:25
DRWhiteThat's a GUI for it...04:25
DRWhitethat's useless04:25
fsmithredI find it very useful04:26
fsmithredxrandr --output HDMI2 --mode 1600x900 --output VGA1 --mode 1280x1024 --rate 60.02 --left-of HDMI204:26
DRWhiteDoesn't do anything more than xrandr04:26
fsmithredthere you go04:26
fsmithredchange values to suit your situation04:26
DRWhiteSo you are saying that Devuan Display has just not recognised that there is the HDMI p\ort, and not turned it on?04:27
fsmithredbtw, I don't have hdmi. That's what it calls the DVI04:27
rwp"xrandr --auto" is almost always the only thing I need to do.  Let it automatically detect and determine what it needs.04:27
fsmithredI don't know what the problem is04:27
DRWhiteI have a GTX 1050 in this workstation.04:27
rwpThat will mirror the two monitors.  But if that works then can set one or the other to the left or right of the other.04:27
DRWhitexrandr --autoxrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default04:27
rwpCan you pastebin somewhere the output of "xrandr" raw so we can see what it is seeing?04:28
DRWhitexrandr can't use what it has not detected.04:28
DRWhitexrandr --auto\nxrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default04:29
rwpxrandr | nc termbin.com 9999 would do it.04:29
DRWhiteDo you have any secure place?04:29
DRWhiteOr only insecure places?04:29
rwpIf you are sharing it publicly here then ... ??04:30
fsmithredno04:30
fsmithreddon't post it here04:30
fsmithredyou'll get auto-kicked04:30
rwpRight.  That is the reason for the pastebin.04:31
DRWhitethere is also a reason for using Devuan, SECURITY04:31
DRWhiteI can tell you all the details you want to know.04:31
rwpI don't understand what is "insecure" about a pastebin.  I am flummuxed.04:31
DRWhitei.e. not a secure place to paste the information I don't want to go to the world to let the world know everything about me.04:32
fsmithredyou already told us what vid card you have04:32
rwpHmm...  Here is the output of xrandr on my laptop right now. https://termbin.com/lvwa04:32
DRWhiteSo I have one screen in xrandr that is active, as I have said. The other one is not detected, as I have said.04:32
rwpI just can't get too excited about the security ramifications of sharing that with the world or not.  But whatever.04:33
DRWhiteyou probably have facebook?04:33
rwpMe?  I am one of the people that boycott Facebook.04:34
DRWhiteThat is a good thing04:35
DRWhiteWhat about Linkedin?04:35
rwpSome 20 years ago I actually got LinkedIn to delete the account I had created there.  It was soooo funny!  The rep I talked with then said, "And now you can *never* have an account here." and was all in a huff.  Too funny!04:35
DRWhiteBut anyway.. How can I get the second display going?04:36
DRWhiteWell, it isn't actually gone you know.04:36
DRWhiteYour information is out there forever04:36
rwpfsmithred gave you some good advice about using xrandr.  I do that on all of the systems I have used with multiple monitors for the last decade or so.  Before that it was required to hack the X config file.  But that hasn't been needed in a looong time.  Recommend using xrandr now.04:37
DRWhiteokay, and in xrandr, when you run xrandr, it normally displays more than 2 monitors/screens?04:37
DRWhiteThen changing settings works.04:37
DRWhiteMy situation is different to that04:38
rwpYes.  When the system is happy and has two monitors then xrandr displays information about both monitors.04:38
DRWhiteAs I have already said several time, it only sees one display.04:38
DRWhiteI can't get anything to get the second display04:38
rwpIf it doesn't then something is definitely not going to work.  The question is why isn't the monitor being recognized?  Which needs information in order to debug.04:38
DRWhiteyup.04:39
DRWhiteAnd I don't know what informatin is needed tha tI can provide04:39
rwpI have the advantage of being a pack-rat with a variety of equipment.  I would try a different monitor and seeing if that worked.  Things like that.  Divide and conquer.04:39
DRWhiteI have already stated that other drives I have used with Devuan pick it all up fine.04:39
DRWhiteDo I just need to do a reinstall?04:40
DRWhiteyou know, 4th time lucky?04:40
gnarfacewell, you should figure out what you did wrong with this one first04:40
DRWhiteyou mean this third one?04:40
rwpI haven't *needed* to install the proprietary nvidia driver for ages and ages either.04:41
rwpThe nouveau driver has been more than sufficient for everything I have needed.  Which is mostly full screen video.04:41
rwpIt's the game players that complain (mostly) that nouveau isn't good enough for them.04:41
gnarfacehe's gone04:41
rwpOh!  Yep.  Gone.04:42
rwpAnd I must relocate from here to there too.  Laters!04:43
systemdleteI am finding that upowerd does not work well with cinnamon or xfce on my laptop (the ASUS H101A I've been working on for what seems like ages now).  It does not update the remaining power; it seems like it only sets the remainder upon startup of the power panel applet.05:42
systemdleteHowever, I note that acpi(1) from the command line DOES appear to be tracking the remaining power.  upowerd was apparently added for implementing... eh, let's just say "our old friend"  So I am wondering if it is as simple as deleting upowerd and installing acpid/acpi.   Some users have implemented their own scripts rather than rely on the various panel applets05:44
systemdleteIt is really scary taking the laptop off AC, that is, unless I remember to call acpi from the cmd line every so often.05:45
systemdleteI had the machine run out of juice on me and restarting means cleaning up the corrupted file system (no problems though; as we know linux cleans this up accurately).  Howevver, sometimes a recovery reboot like this drops me into the standalone during boot to force an fsck05:46
systemdleteI entertain your thoughts if you have some.  Tia.05:47
systemdleteupower relies on acpid... hmmm.  That was not installed by default.  I wonder if...05:52
* systemdlete reboots, just to make sure05:56
systemdlete(that is, after installing acpid.  Now upowerd AND acpid will be running simultaneously.  I hope this doesn't screw it up.)05:57
gnarfacesystemdlete: i never heard of upowerd.06:04
gnarfacesystemdlete: i think your assumption about needing acpid is correct.  upowerd may or may not be necessary, but that would depend on the individual applets.  you might also need acpi-support-base and pm-utils.  i can't guarantee you won't have to edit some of the scripts that come with them06:05
gnarfacethe "task-laptop" package might be able to catch any missing stuff that would be relevant06:06
systemdletewell, pm-utils is a dependency, apparently.06:43
systemdleteI'll add task-laptop if I find that anything is amiss.06:43
systemdlete(thanks!)06:43
systemdleteAlso, I just noticed something.  I think I have finally figured out why cinnamon sometimes comes up and seems to hang with just the background from the dm:  The screensaver is running!!!   No kidding.  I opened a console, killed the screen saver and voila! the rest of the desktop comes up normal.06:45
systemdleteNow, why the screen saver would be doing this is mysterious.  I've never seen this behavior anywhere else.06:45
systemdleteweird.06:45
systemdletebtw, that upowerd seems to have been installed FOR ME.   I did not request it.  Maybe a dependency of cinnamon of some sort?06:46
furrywolfI can't help with any of the other stuff, but aptitude why upowerd should tell you why it's installed.06:59
systemdleteyou are correct -- it tells me that upower was installed as part of cinnamon07:13
systemdletespecifically, a package called cinnamon-session07:15
systemdletewhich in turn needs upower07:15
systemdleteso I /may/ need to disable upowerd if I can get acpid working satisfactorily.07:15
systemdleteDoes the power panel applet work for laptops under any of the supported desktops?   I mean, does it show a periodically updated power level?   (Mine does not in either cinnamon or xfce, but acpi does)07:21
systemdleteI note that upowerd is welded at very high temperatures to the systemd world, so I may be out of luck.  There might not even be a way to disable it, for all I know, because it seems that the upowerd is welded onto cinnamon!07:36
systemdlete(jeepers creepers, after all the work I've done on this...)07:36
* systemdlete thanks furrywolf for the reminder about "aptitude why" -- I forgot that one07:37
gnarfacehmm. well it basically does come down to that, if they removed the old support in favor of using systemd07:47
gnarfaceso in your case maybe you should be filing a bug report with upowerd07:47
gnarfacebut you might be able to find legacy power management applets and stuff07:48
gnarfacei admit it is not something i've delved into recently07:50
systemdleteWell, I've already started diddling around with all that, so yes.   It looks like I may end up writing my own scriptlet.07:54
systemdleteas far as filing a bug, if the devs supporting upowerd are distinct from the devs supporting cinnamon, maybe they will have little to offer, other than filing the bug with cinnamon devs.  And I already have a query with cinnamon at the linuxmint site (cinnamon has no site of its own, per se) on their forum.07:55
systemdleteI /think/ I am doing due diligence on this...07:56
systemdleteI do, as always, appreciate your input (and of others)07:57
avboxFirst I wnat to thank you everybody who gaved so far a feedback to avmultimedia. thaks. I got the fedback that booting in uefi in virtual environment does not work. Yes, this is like. I debugged it and it looks that starting /etc/init.d/eudev never ends. What is a bit curious, in devuan ascii it works like a charm. Any ideas or who is respnsible16:58
avboxfor eudev?16:58
avboxIf someone knows a devuan based distro with beowulf that boots with uefi and vm instances, this also would be welcomed.17:00
