Josh_2Hi, how do I install java 15 on Devuan? I am trying to play FaF xD02:57
ShorTiecompile ??03:07
Josh_2...03:14
Josh_2Just wanna play FaF wish some buddies :(03:19
Josh_2with*03:19
Josh_2okay think I got it03:33
blockheadDo wine & win64 conflict?  Can I install them both?  My goal is to run 32bit and 64bit windows programs.  Are the packages wine-binfmt and wine64-preloader needed?  I'm running Devuan Testing.03:44
golinuxblockhead: I hope you're not using testing in your sources.list03:54
golinuxBecause Debian is now stable but we are still in testing which means files merged from Debian will be coming from bookworm not bulleye which is where Chimaera still is.03:57
golinuxhttps://www.devuan.org/os/releases03:58
blockheadi just double-checked, all the lines have "chimaera" in them04:05
_ds_I  moved from beowulf to chimaera a few weeks ago – tricky bit was my apt pinning (/etc/apt/preferences) as it wasn't set up quite right04:08
_ds_(I also have unstable & experimental in my sources.list)04:09
blockheadthe last time I installed wine it was in a different distro so I'd compiled it manually, first for 64bit, then for 32bit, with a "--with-wine64=../wine64" as part of the ./configure phase, referring to the previously compiled 64bit version.  I'm not sure which set of Devuan packages would be equivalent to that.04:16
blockheadall right, I think i may have answered my ownquestion.  found a debian wiki page: https://wiki.debian.org/Wine04:57
XenguyThe debian wiki is usually pretty good info04:59
blockheadi had no idea I had to enable multilib first.  d'oh!05:00
blockheadfortunately that was quick & easy05:00
XenguyI have used WINE successfully in the past, but I don't recall the details, as it's been awhile05:02
blockheadI know that feeling, been almost a year since I installed wine05:02
XenguyIt does work though, pretty amazing really05:11
gnarfaceblockhead: yea, as you've observed, the debian wine packages are split into 32-bit and 64-bit packages which require multiarch but will work together the same way as winehq's "wow64" dual-arch build, but is fundamentally distinct in that one way05:12
gnarfaceyou can run either the 32-bit or 64-bit ones separately due to this, but there's very little benefit because most windows programs you'd need wine for in the first place are horrific monstrosities of arbitrarily mixed-arch libraries05:14
blockheadyes, much to learn.  On the positive side, i've installed it and run a few games and programs as tests.  All ran fine.05:16
gourmorning. i installed devuan/ceres/runit on my desktop machine with a single user account and wonder if there is any benefit of replacing slim with lightdm?11:58
systemdleteA short time ago, I noticed that my disk access lights were going constantly.  So I ran iotop as root at cmd line, and didn't see anything that could explain it.  I shut down all of my VMs, everything.  But iotop did not report anything using lots of I/O, except for jbd2, and that was only once every few seconds.12:47
systemdleteMost of the time the system, per iotop, seemed to be somewhat quiescent.   Finally, I decided to reboot.  And that cleared up whatever it was causing I/O.12:47
systemdletebtw, when I shut down my VMs, I also disconnected from the Internet.  Right now, the machine is humming along quietly, with only very occasional accesses to disk.12:48
systemdleteAlso, I should mention, I ran iotop without any options, with root being the only active user on the machine.12:49
systemdleteSeems like there are some activities that even iotop cannot detect, probably because they are very short in duration (less than what, 2 secs?)12:50
systemdleteThis is not a huge problem, although I don't like seeing my disk drives going crazy when nothing appears to be going on in the actual system (I mean, that I can observe).12:51
systemdleteI'm wondering if I was seeing some kind of latent disk syncing, although this was going on for at least 20 minutes.   BTW, I've seen this before on occasion.  Also, running beowulf with the latest updates, afaik.12:53
systemdleteUgh.  started that again...12:56
fsmithredI once noticed a lot of disk activity, and I finally traced it to /var/log/auth.log recording all the attempted ssh breakins. I moved my ssh port and the noise stopped.13:00
gnarfaceiotop -a13:10
bb|hcbsystemdlete: iotop will only see processes, along with that its a good idea to run iostat -x 1 - this will show the activity per block device13:39
bb|hcbas a side note, I have uploaded iotop-c in debian, it already reached bullseye/chimaera...13:40
systemdletefsmithred:  I don't need ssh here, so I have disabled it.  It was only listening on the default (local), so I am not sure what/who would be knocking.  I don't see any evidence of breakins in the log.14:10
systemdletebut thanks for reminding me.  I need to go through the services and disable or remove what I don't need.14:14
systemdletebb|hcb:  search does not show iotop-c in... backports?14:23
bb|hcbyep, not backported yet14:25
bb|hcbi will do soon14:25
systemdlete:(14:26
systemdlete:)14:26
systemdletethanks!14:26
systemdletefor now, I will take gnarface's advice and run iotop with -a -- that should help turn out the bad guys14:26
bb|hcbsystemdlete: maybe its a good idea to file a bug in debian bts requesting that14:27
systemdletein debian, not in devuan?14:27
systemdleteI mean, if you say it is already in bullseye14:28
bb|hcbyes, debian, it will automagically come to devuan afterwards14:30
systemdleteok, so what did you mean when you said it already reached bullseye?  (that's beowulf, right?)14:31
bb|hcbno, bullseye is chimaera, buster is beowulf14:31
systemdleteOH!14:31
systemdleteyou are right14:31
systemdleteeasy to get confused...14:31
systemdletewill reportbug work on devuan?  Or should I use a web page?14:35
user____Yes, code name games, the latest trick to sink Linux...14:36
systemdleteI prefer version numbers myself, but... maybe the rest of the linux world doesn't.14:47
systemdletebb|hcb:  I used reportbug to request a backport of iotop-c14:48
user____And be sure to reuse each letter in the alphabet for at least 3 things when using code names, to completely lose the enemy14:56
user____At least Ubuntu et al increment the letters in (Latin) Alphabetic order.14:57
user____Problems will appear after Zippy Zygote, but it will take a while.14:57
systemdleteYes, you can never run out of numbers...14:59
gouri've a feeling that volume gain on devuan/xfce is much higher than on debian/xfce/gnome...any possible explanation?15:42
_ds_Are you using plain ALSA, pulseaudio, pipewire…? (I doubt that I can help, though.)15:52
user____ALSA with oss compat plugin. So /dev/dsp works but I'd like a bit more control and higher sample rate than 8k16:05
gour_ds_: pulse16:07
Xenguygour, re: slim vs. lightdm:  Both work, but I thought I recall somebody saying that slim is no longer actively maintained?16:16
gourXenguy: yeah, right. i believe it's not maintained for quite some years, last in 2013 or something...but, otoh, it still does it job, although, i agree, it would be maybe better to progress to something which is maintained16:39
Xenguygour, On Beowulf, I still use the default, which I believe is slim.  I works fine, but maybe I'll switch to lightdm when I eventually upgrade to Chimaera16:48
gourok, thanks for the input16:49
ham5urgIs a dedicated GPU inside a VM (like a Win2019 Remote Destop Server) a huge win? Quite expensive these GPUs these days for s test-shot.16:49
Xenguynp.  BTW that video you were referencing, if it's the same one I think it is, is someone FreeBSD guy who thinks systemd is a neat idea...  That is indeed a 'tragedy'  : -)16:51
ham5urgXenguy, why Xen and not KVM/Qemu?16:54
XenguyJust a coincidence.  I invented the nick before Xen the technology existed : -)16:57
XenguyOr was named as such16:57
fluffywolfat least you're not vmwareguy.  :P17:02
