e3d3I accidentally have overwritten /etc/bash_completion and tried to restore it by reinstalling bash_completion, but this didn't do it. Any ideas how I can get the original file back ?00:19
gnarfacee3d3: i assume that's in the "bash" package since there's no bash_completion package00:23
gnarfacee3d3: it looks like a generated file though, not one actually listed in the package inventory though00:23
brocashelmbash-completion is the package00:23
e3d3gnarface: ?? I see a bash_completion package in synaptic00:23
brocashelmthere are no underscores for package names00:24
gnarfaceah, is ee00:24
gnarfacei see00:24
e3d3I'am sorry, its bash-completions indeed00:24
gnarfacewell it seems like a lot of packges put stuff in /etc/bash_completion.d00:24
e3d3bash-completion00:24
gnarfacemake sure the old one is deleted first, config files aren't replaced by default00:25
brocashelmare the files bash.bashrc and profile present in /etc?00:26
brocashelmi tested installing bash-completion for the first time and got no /etc/bash_completion file00:26
e3d3I've deleted it (the overwritten on), and the bash.bashrc & profile are present in /etc00:26
brocashelmnot sure what else can be done other than retrieving from a backup00:27
brocashelmif you had something like timeshift, you could dig in and retrieve it that way00:27
e3d3completion still seems to work00:27
e3d3Its funny because just before I added manually completions for exa, a ls-replacement, and thought about to rapport it here as big issue since long, just as silly joke. But why are the exa completions files not included in the package ?00:30
gnarfacei was just looking too sloppily, sorry. i thought i had /etc/bash_completion here but i only have /etc/bash_completion.d/00:32
gnarface(and some stuff from various other packages inside it)00:32
e3d3same for me, I was a little sloppy when completing the file name00:32
e3d3I hope that you are right about that /etc/bash_completion is a generated file, and that it regenerate itself if needed. As far as I can see, completions still work as always.00:37
e3d3I have cp aliased to "cp -iv" and trusted to much on this to forget it when using sudo cp, without the extra options. I was warned for this bad habit00:40
e3d3brocashelm: gnarface thanks again for the help, and whatever you do for sharing the superb Devuan00:46
rknopCan somebody help me out?  The GTK file chooser, at least as instantiated from the Gimp, no longer seems to be honoring my gsettings configurations.01:09
rknopI've run "gsettings set org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser location-mode filename-entry" (for instance).  It used to be that I could hit CTRL-L in the GTK file chooser, and it'd give me a bar where I could type out the path I wanted to go to01:10
rknopHowever, it's now ignoring CTRL-L01:10
rknopIs there a new secret for getting GTK3 to have a typeable location bar?  Or have the Gnome devs finally decided that they really don't want users interacting with their file chooser in a way other than what they think is the one true way?01:11
adhocdoes smell like the gnome3 way01:11
adhocdoes it work the same way in debian ?01:12
rknopI dunno... don't have Debian installed anywhere.01:12
adhocgnome3/gtk3 wants to be running on a tablet, not ancient clumbsy mechanical keyboards ;)01:13
rknopI just discovered that if I click on something in the filesystem list on the left, then CTRL-L *does* start to work.01:13
adhoci don't either.01:13
rknopHowever, I've *also* done "gsettings set org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser startup-mode cwd", and it's ignoring that (only showing me recent files).01:13
golinuxIf it's not a devuan issue, this conversation belongs in #devuan-offtopic01:14
rknopHmm... the descriptions of the IRC channels on https://www.devuan.org/os/community don't jibe with that01:14
golinuxAre you running Devuan?01:15
rknopYes01:15
rknop"the general help and discussion channel for Devuan users " <-- that sounds a lot like what I was doing here01:15
golinuxThe conversation was a little confusing.01:15
golinuxYou didn't even identify what release you are using01:16
golinuxAnyway . . . carry on . . .01:16
u-amarsh04added an extra post to detail what needed to be done when adding a card to the pc to keep specifying the correct card in /etc/pulse/default.pa: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?pid=33041#p3304102:23
fierhey everyone. i've been really enjoying devuan on my 2003 system with 256mb of ram. however i've had to install it using an external computer. is there some way to flatboot the setup usb (ala WinPE, no ramdisk) or to get swap quite early?15:38
fierbecause as-is, if i boot the setup usb, i get a kernel panic because the init system is killed (likely due to lacking memory)15:39
djphfier: uhh, that's quite anemic in terms of RAM ... like I can't even get my basic install below about 300 MiB15:52
fierdjph: i use openbox for a minimal desktop setup netsurf for browsing basic websites. complex websites are obviously off limits15:53
djph... yeah, I'm talking about no DE at all15:53
fierhuh, that's strange.. it works splendid for me. mind you, linux might cache more if you have more memory, and if you use 64-bit, the memory usage is gonna be a little higher15:55
fierwhen running no DE, my install ends up using a little over 40MB of physical memory15:56
u-amarsh04me: 1993 - UnixWare in 16 MiB of RAM, 2004 - Debian in 48 MiB of RAM with xdm15:57
fierthat's using the default init system for devuan, which i think is sysvinit?15:58
fiersounds neat16:01
u-amarsh04sysvinit in all those cases16:02
fierthough nowadays, at least with devuan, you need 192mb or so at least. it becomes quite sluggish with 128mb, at least it did on my system. debian is worse though, it was way less usable for me than devuan on 256mb.16:03
fierdid my head in, two buddies pointed me towards systemd being the potential cause, and it sure was part of it16:04
u-amarsh04I don't think that systemd developers subjected themselves to having to develop on a non-local machine, as kexec failures put me off systemd to begin with16:06
fieri've personally started using linux after systemd was already everywhere, and i haven't had much issue with it personally. the memory usage was my only issue, coming from w7, which can run fine on 128mb if you make the memory management behave via software.16:08
* u-amarsh04 remembers w2k in 96 MiB of RAM16:10
fieryou might be surprised to know, no lie, that w7 has better memory management (if using aforementioned software) than xp, at least. lol16:10
u-amarsh04w7 is still used in some machines where I work (hospital)16:11
fierthat's good to hear, i have a large appreciation for 7, and hope that people will craft some sort of replacement for the SSL libs16:12
fieror alternatively that less websites force HTTPS16:12
u-amarsh04http://www.bom.gov.au is still http only16:13
fierhahaha, that's funny16:14
Wonkau-amarsh04: you're very lucky if there's nothing xp-based anymore. CT scanners, ultrasound machines, ...16:26
critrbest you can do for xp-required situations is run xp in a vm on a later windows.16:39
Wonkaunlikely on medical machines16:41
FatPhilanyone know a way of (in plain X, no fancy DE) disabling my lenovo's touchpad? It's sending phantom events which is making the system unusable.16:48
fiernot sure if plain X uses libinput on devuan or not, might be worth looking in those configs. otherwise, perhaps try the function key on the keyboard for switching the touchpad on/off?16:50
FatPhilthere's nothing looking like a touchpad on any of the F-keys, and those don't seem to work anyway with my barebones setup.16:53
fierlibinput configs probably a good bet then16:54
fierpre-2006 thinkpad? just curious16:56
FatPhilx240, so mid 2010s16:57
fierhuh, interesting. on mine ranging from 2006 - 2011, there is a fn + f8 combo for it. but i never tried it16:59
FatPhilmy f8 looks suspiciously like a wifi killswitch17:01
FatPhilxev was ambiguous on this matter17:02
FatPhilah, no, I see XF86WLAN17:02
fierah, i see17:02
fieri'll give the key combo a shot here, on my x6117:03
fieroh wait, it doesn't even have a touchpad17:04
fierderp17:04
FatPhilI'll see your derp and raise you a herp^2. apparently 6 years ago I wrote a little helper script to enable/disable the thing, as it would often get in the way of my typing.17:05
fierwell then! x)17:06
FatPhilxinput --set-prop $TPID "Device Enabled" $NEWSTATE, where the vars come from greps17:07
FatPhilAlas, it makes the nipple useless too, as it disables the buttons too.17:08
FatPhilMaybe it cuold be fixed with some kind of sensitivity setting, but I have no idea what I'm doing in that direction17:08
fieryou are on the right track though i'm sure17:09
used____What machine is this?17:09
fierxinput has some argument to list all the properties for a device, have a look in that!17:09
fierxinput list-props <device>17:10
FatPhillots of them: https://www.x.org/archive/X11R7.5/doc/man/man4/synaptics.4.html17:11
FatPhilthere are 3 weights, that's probably what I need.17:11
FatPhilmy list's also claiming some "Noise Cancellation" property. No idea what the magic numbers mean though.17:13
used____Filters jitter from position detection.17:16
used____Likely filter coefficients. Larger numbers = more filtering normally.17:17
FatPhilthat's improved it a little, but made it worse in some ways. I think shitty hardware is beyond fixing.17:25
FatPhilAt least I can disable Two Finger Scrolling, and still vaguely have some half-broken-half-usable touchpad and buttons that doesn't cause absolute chaos17:26
fierheh17:26
fieryeah i suppose just swap in a better touchpad17:26
fierx250 touchpad oughta do it?17:28
FatPhilx250 has hard buttons, mine are all on-pad17:29
FatPhilworse design evar!17:29
FatPhilthanks jobs!17:29
fieraye, i think you can swap in the x250 pad though, if i remember correctly17:29
fierwill make the windows drivers throw a hissy fit if you don't edit them but i bet linux oughta just handle it17:30
fierthough maybe there still is a way to reduce the sensitivity to 0. i tried doing it with my trackpoint just now but had no success17:31
onefangShitty hardware is nothing a pair of wire snippers can't fix.  B-)17:33
fieror a hammer17:34
DashiePieonefang: I feel that right now, but I can't until the 2nd week of January17:39
DashiePieexcept I'll take fier's hammer instead17:39
fieryou're free to17:39
onefangFier's Hammer, sounds like it's a god level tool, with +10 to touchpad destruction.17:40
DashiePieit's Legendary rarity17:43
fierB)17:43
used____Then the USB cable must be like Excalibur. Takes real force to tear out and 0wn.18:05
critrjust get your cat to lay on the touchpad.18:21
FatPhilit ain't a mouse18:22
FatPhilah, because consistency is evil, the 'synclient' program uses different names for the settings than xinput does.18:34
FatPhilyikes, libinput measure touchpad-pressure is showing the device has gone mental18:52
fiereef18:52
onefangDefinitely needs a cat, they tend to calm you down when sitting in your lap / touchpad.18:53
FatPhilit reports multiple touches, palms, thumbs, etc. even when I'm not touching it.18:54
used____FatPhil: now play with the filter numbers in settings.18:58
used____Also clean the pad if it was in a cuprboard until now. Capacitive pads do not like stains, fingerprints, grime.18:59
onefangThey probably don't like cat dander either.18:59
used____Dander does not have the 80 epsilon-r of humid gunk.18:59
_ds_critr, to lay what on the touchpad?19:10
* _ds_ assumes eggs, which would be unusual for a cat19:11
onefangCats have eggs, they are just really tiny.19:14
FatPhilseen in a (poorly-translated) report on harassment of journalists: "reporting on hot-bottom issues"19:17
used____Tabloid paparazzi, then?20:00
used____<let's take the ot to -ot>20:00
FatPhilbu-bu-but all the unnecessary touchpad events were giving my laptop a hot bottom!20:20
FatPhilsounds like it's a fairly common issue from the google searches.20:21
used____I'm sure google searches for hot bottom are quite common FatPhil21:33
