figtree93Hello, is there any recommendations against using Daedalus for my daily machine as I used to use testing debian many years ago as my go to. I have recently been given the opportunity to return to linux on my machine for daily work, or would sticking to Chimaera with backports be more suited for my daily machine?00:47
ShorTiei'd stick to stable if me00:49
figtree93Forgot to mention I have a modern NVIDIA gpu and cpu, so would prefer more up to date officially supported drivers00:50
ShorTiestick to windows then00:57
figtree93I don't use windows00:58
gnarfacehttps://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/policy-query.html?c=package&q=%5Envidia-driver.*&x=submit00:58
gnarfaceif you're picking based on nvidia driver version, here they are00:58
gnarfacedaedalus has 470.* but chimaera has 460.*, it's not that much older00:58
gnarface... and i can't imagine it'll be too long before 470.* or later shows up in chimaera-backports00:58
gnarfacechimaera is brand new around here so there's extra risk going past it00:59
gnarfacedamn.  got kicked off the server for that01:00
gnarfacewtf01:00
gnarfaceanyway, i'd recommend trying chimaera first01:01
figtree93Thanks for the actual useful answer gnarface, think I will stick with Chimaera as it looks like the kernel and nvidia driver are modern enough to support it, cheers01:02
gnarfacenp01:02
gnarfaceif it's too old you can always upgrade01:02
gnarfacein my experience, by the time the stable one is too old for Battle.net that's usually about the time someone puts the newer one in backports01:04
gnarface(and iirc the official policy upstream is that it must work with everything in the distro, so this usually only relates to commercial or 3rd party software)01:06
figtree93I don't game on this machine, for some reason the work IT department sent us computers with modern nvidia gpus... Just never had experience with nvidia and don't want to have to fight for my distrobution to support modern hardware. It looks like the current stable just got released and it is all supported by my hardware so no problems :)01:09
gnarfaceah good, well cheers then01:11
fluffywolfif no one is using their modern gpus, sell them on ebay and put in non-modern ones.  :)01:12
figtree93It is some gigantic spaceship looking thing from system76, quite frankly I am affraid to open it lol01:15
critrmodern gpu's are awful things. if you want to get rid of one, just ask and i'll take it off your hands. i'll even pay the shipping.01:24
gnarfacelol, "you don't want that nasty thing, give it to me..."01:25

RainDodgerhas anyone else been having problems updating their apt cache (using 'apt update' command) via the Devuan's hidden service? Tried with different installations on different hardware and keep getting the same error message: 'Host Unreachable'. Updating cache over clearnet works fine though. Is their hidden service down or something?02:20
RainDodgershould mention that my ISP isn't blocking access to Tor since I can still connect to other hidden services just fine. only Devuan's one is giving me problems02:20
XenguyRainDodger, Thanks for the bug report02:22
RainDodgerNo problem. I can still update over clearnet so it's not the end of the world, but updating over Tor is definitely my preference02:23
XenguyLet's see if the powers that be can get it working again02:24
RainDodgerI certainly hope so. Being able to update over Tor is a huge bonus for any distro imo02:30
critrwould be great since i just restricted all my outgoing traffic to tor.02:31
Xenguy: -)02:32
Dima[m]Hello, how can I safely remove systemd ? I tried to follow devuan "manual" but every time I just broke my system and that's all, I tried to do it on Debian 1110:19
Dima[m]I don't want to use devuan iso fie because on vps it's hard to ask administrators to give me booted devuan installer, after it I can install system and than I need to ask for help again, because I can't remove iso file myself, it's pain10:23
Dima[m]So I need a working migration10:24
Dima[m]From systemd to other init systems10:24
brocashelmdo you have a log of your output? have you made sure your sources.list file only fetches packages from devuan's repository? where exactly during the process does your system break?10:28
rrqDima[m]: https://git.devuan.org/rrq/buster-to-devuan10:29
RainDodgerHey just touching base about that bug with the hidden service earlier. Just checked and it's working fine now. Thanks guys10:50
GyrosGeierI switched using aptitude11:20
GyrosGeierbut I have no idea if that still works11:21
Dima[m]<rrq> "Dima: https://git.devuan.org/rrq..." <- I will try it, thank you11:22
samuraikidI added the ceres repo on daedalus, but kde discover still doesn't show highlights apps12:34
critrdid you apt update?13:05
samuraikidyes, not that noob :v i made it to work on chimaera but no way on daedalus13:21
samuraikidedit: has i had installed flatpak, i had to change the "make favorite" on discovery to flatpak and change it back, cheers17:32
jason1234hello21:24
jason1234bug bug urgent21:24
jason1234please fix that mess urgently, if possible, wehen you can .. fast if possible.21:24
jason1234we need to run teams.21:24
jason1234The following packages have unmet dependencies:21:24
jason1234 xfce4 : Depends: xfce4-settings (>= 4.12.0) but it is not going to be installed21:24
jason1234         Depends: xfce4-session (>= 4.12.0) but it is not going to be installed21:24
jason1234E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packagesK21:24
jason1234under ascii. amd64.21:25
gnarfaceuh21:25
brocashelmhave you tried: apt-get -f install21:25
gnarfaceunder ascii?  this seems unlikely to be for real21:25
jason1234it is21:25
jason1234i am pro devuan21:25
jason1234i did debootstrap.21:26
gnarfacebut ascii is ancient, it's unlikely that it's actually got a broken dependency on xfce21:26
gnarfacethere must be some user error here21:26
jason1234it does not matter than it is ancient.21:26
jason1234people <--- we are people21:26
gnarfacewell it does in the sense that thousands of other people have already installed it before you21:26
jason1234i test more.21:26
gnarfaceit matters in the statistical sense21:27
jason1234most people use a cdrom... this is baby testing.21:27
brocashelmi'd also check for any essential packages that are being held by aptitude/apt preventing installation of xfce4, or if you might have done some experimental apt pinning21:27
gnarfacejason1234: could you show me the whole debootstrap command you used?21:27
jason1234it happends about 1 week ago.21:27
jason1234can we have a mirror of pkg list from 2 weeks ago?21:28
gnarfacejason1234: this is a fresh empty dir you're running debootstrap on that gives you this error?21:28
jason1234 debootstrap  --no-check-gpg    --include=wpasupplicant   ascii  .   http://pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged21:28
gnarfacewhy --no-check-gpg?21:28
jason1234still the same...21:29
gnarfacei don't think that's what's causing this but if it was being caused by a failed attempt to MITM then --no-check-gpg would be quite dangerous21:29
jason1234man, this happened about each one or two years the broken pkg list.21:29
gnarfacevery weird but maybe someone was just changing disks on the server or something. have you tried it today?21:29
gnarfacealso, are you using an apt proxy?21:29
jason1234it happened this week21:30
jason1234last week or about 2 wweeks it was fine.21:30
jason1234xfce4 : Depends: xfce4-settings (>= 4.12.0) but it is not going to be installed   Depends: xfce4-session (>= 4.12.0) but it is not going to be installed21:30
jason1234i have  a rootfs working, on my pc.21:30
gnarfacefsmithred: what's the chances this is a problem with the ascii repo?  ^^^^21:31
jason1234i will make it, i dont depend on you.21:31
jason1234however, please in future, make sure to test.21:31
gnarfacejason1234: i'd like you to run this again right now just to know if it's still failing like that21:31
jason1234ok, put back the 2 weeks ago pkg list21:31
jason1234I create a new partition21:32
gnarfacejason1234: note that if you're using deb.devuan.org instead of pkgmaster, sporadic failures while the repos are upgrading packages are not uncommon.... do you really think the ascii packages have changed in the last 2 weeks?21:32
gnarfacejason1234: none of this should be happening with ascii21:32
gnarface(afaik anyway)21:32
gnarfacejason1234: i'd also try it without the --include21:33
jason1234ok, I fixed it locally21:34
jason1234here is the magic.21:34
jason1234this list of packages for xfce just works fine (2 weeks ago likely): https://termbin.com/kcr121:34
gnarfacecan you just /msg it to me?21:35
gnarfacethe list, not the link21:35
gnarfacei don't work here, and i still don't think anything should have changed in ascii that could have done this, but i'm confident someone will look into it21:36
jason1234hum ok, but with /msg ? how you paste a text ?21:36
jason1234gnarface: thank you21:36
gnarfaceif you /msg me to open the chat tab, you should be able to paste an arbitrary amount of text into the text field of that tab21:37
jason1234this is the reason that i mirror all working installation, last year during covid, your ascii package was broken. I was in such a hell to not debootstrap.21:37
jason1234ok21:37
jason1234roger!21:37
gnarfacei do recommend making backups21:37
gnarfacerate limiting will slow your /msg paste to me but i'm patient21:38
jason1234yeap21:41
jason1234backups21:41
jason1234i know that21:41
jason1234;)21:41
jason1234I discovered it ...21:41
gnarfaceis there any possibility that xfce packages from another version got mixed in there accidentally somehow?21:41
jason1234my gitlab has all mirrored !21:42
gnarfacemaybe xfce backports or something?21:42
jason1234nope, i use main only21:42
gnarfaceand nothing hanging over from a previous release?21:42
jason1234let's push all debs21:44
jason1234surely, now, I format always before.21:44
jason1234*surely, not, cuz i format21:44
gnarfacenow, when it fails you have tested a second time immediately, right?21:45
gnarfacetemporary failures with some of these repos are common due to various circumstances...21:45
jason1234this is the major probelm with debian ... nothing never work.21:46
gnarfacethey do have problems with their repos too, but they have a lot more of them to spread around the risk too21:47
jason1234i mirror on gitlab! this working config21:47
gnarfacelast time i was using debian i think there was over 150 official repos and we've got 1521:48
jason1234debain = nothing works, by defintion.21:48
gnarfaceall kinds of stuff works you just gotta know what21:48
golinuxPEBKAC?21:49
gnarfacethe fact it doesn't always work when it does work though, i feel you there... that happens a lot on the releases where packages change a lot... not so much on ascii these days though i would think21:49
jason1234debian is not but unstable thing... good luck to follow debian... seriously.21:50
jason1234ok, all fixed on my installation. i can run teams for tomorrow: please find the mirror of the sda2, working from 2 weeks ago: https://gitlab.com/openbsd98324/ascii/-/tree/main/linux/devuan/ascii/amd6421:53
* Xenguy piles into bjb 's car...21:57
jason1234btw, since >=chimaera,...  bookworm, I have lost interests in using debian based software. it is too unreliable. I prefer LFS. At least, I know it works. Modern Debian has nothing in common with Unix.22:08
jason1234ascii was my last devuan until eol.22:08
XenguySuit yourself22:09
jason1234It started with "su - " ;)22:09
XenguyI always did it that way anyway, so it was inconsequential for me22:10
jason1234it is not unix22:10
Xenguy*nix has different dialects, let's say22:10
jason1234it just works22:13
jason1234on bsd, we have no issue like cert issue22:13
jason1234kodi on aarch64,. failed. failed to open "zone.tab".22:24
FilipZHi! How I can change my window appearance back from "Clearlooks-Phenix-Deepsea" to the default motive? I just clicked that once by mistake, and it is the only option here among the window appearances.22:26
gnarfacehmmm, well there's an easy way to fix the part about there only being one option...22:30
FilipZThen how to do that and return the default one?22:30
gnarfacenot sure about the returning to default part22:31
gnarfaceonly guess would be maybe uninstall that theme22:31
gnarfacethere22:31
jason1234lxappearance   is good one if you use lx22:31
gnarfacethere's gotta be an easier way though, maybe a user directory config file to delete22:31
gnarfacelxappearance might work22:31
jason1234gtk-chtheme was the older generation - about 10 years ago22:32
gnarfaceif it's just the gtk theme part, the files are ~/.gtkrc*22:33
gnarfacefor gtk 1 and 2 anyway22:33
gnarfacegtk3 is in .config/gtk-3.022:33
gnarfacei'm not sure if other stuff might reference the theme too though22:33
gnarfacei don't know xfce that wall22:34
gnarfacewell*22:34
FilipZI am using xfce22:34
FilipZHow do I uninstall this theme?22:35
jason1234it is likely into /usr/share...22:36
gnarfacewell the theme package names all end in -theme22:38
gnarfacei wouldn't recommend just deleting stuff... it's strongly advised to remove the package if you want something uninstalled22:38
FilipZI have a 19 folders in "/usr/share/themes/"22:39
gnarfacedpkg -l |grep theme22:39
FilipZWhy is only that one visible?22:39
jason1234normally you will have all to select into lxappearance, here any exqmaple from my desktop: https://postimg.cc/gallery/SbBzZGK22:39
gnarfaceFilipZ: that's a good question, and it might be important if you have lots of themes installed22:39
FilipZI don't remember changing anything about the motives before. I am confused as to why such a stupid issue like that even happens. Shouldn't it be a simple, basic setting, accessible in that "appearance", to be changed to one of the preinstalled graphic motives, and back to the default one?22:43
gnarfaceyea, i agree...22:49
aitorjason1234, if i understood well, you're trying to build your own images of ascii and you ran into an error using debootstrap...22:50
aitori'm referring to this comment: xfce4 : Depends: xfce4-settings (>= 4.12.0) but it is not going to be installed   Depends: xfce4-session (>= 4.12.0) but it is not going to be installed22:55
jason1234no no22:55
jason1234i did : format, debootstrap and apt-get install xfce422:55
aitorok, anyway, i think that the origin of the problem is in a missing package, a missing dependency of xfce4-settings and xfce4-session22:56
jason1234bravo ;) ! yeap22:57
aitorthat is: libupower-glib3 (>= 0.99.0)22:57
aitorthe package doesn't exists22:57
jason1234since ascii is eol or soon or later, almost, the question, is why we still touch it ... when something works, dont touch it22:58
aitorwait...23:02
aitornope... it's missing i guess23:04
jason1234ok, i prepared my sda4 with it . ... once you have a new pckage list, let me know. i will test it.23:08
jason1234for now, it is broekn, I will be back on sunday or saturday. tomorrow, i havent much time.23:09
jason1234thank  youv er y much and all best.23:09
jason1234good night !23:09
jason1234thanks23:09
aitorg'night23:12
