jjakobSadly my IPv6 code got ripped out by someone else even though there was nothing wrong with it.00:00
jjakobfor OpenVPN. When they decided to do their n-th complete rewrite in how all the interfaces code is written.00:00
jjakobI don't have the time to re-add my code *again* every time someone decides to rewrite it all00:01
jjakobVyOS had the potential to be great, but missed due to poor system design and priorities00:02
jjakobAT&T also dumped their DANE fork of Vyatta because I think they got to a dead end00:03
golinuxWhat does any of that have to do with Devuan? Maybe take it it devuan-offtopic?00:08
jjakobpeople were talking about bash-completion, vyatta and edgeos00:10
jjakobbut you're right, I won't spam here any more00:11
rwpjjakob, We are always happy to discuss these things in -offtopic!  Offtopic is on topic there.00:26
AfdalI need a pulseaudio tip01:04
Afdal(I'm still not ready to pack my things and use something else ;_;7)01:04
AfdalDevuan/pulse has been doing thing really irritating thing01:05
Afdalwhere it somehow forgets that my sound setup is 5.1 surround01:05
Afdaland it switches back to analog stereo01:05
AfdalSeems like it's usually setup like that after a reboot01:05
AfdalHow do I make it stick to the configuration I've set it at?01:06
gnarfaceyou made the changes in pavucontrol, as the regular non-root user that runs the audio programs?01:06
Afdalis that the control center GUI01:07
Afdalif so, yes01:07
gnarfaceit might not be, run pavucontrol from a terminal and look01:07
Afdalyeah, that's the gooey01:07
gnarfaceseems strange, i dunno what's going on01:08
gnarfacewhich window manager?01:08
AfdalXfce01:08
gnarfacesomeone certainly knows of a fix for this, i would think01:08
gnarfacei don't have one, but stick around01:09
gnarfacedid 5.1 actually work when you set it? last i tried it was beowulf but 5.1 wasn't even working on my hardware there01:09
Afdalyeah it works fine after I set it01:09
Afdalit just keeps forgetting that I've set it01:09
Afdalso annoying01:09
gnarfacedoes alsamixer have any settings for it? it's rare but some cards do01:10
Afdalwhat do you mean01:10
AfdalAlsamixer seems to only recognize Front, Rear, Center, and Woofer01:11
Afdalhmmm01:11
gnarfaceif you run alsamixer without pulseaudio running, you can get separate (hardware) controls for the soundcard, they're specially generated for each soundcard, and some soundcards actually have a 2/6ch setting there01:11
Afdaloh wait there's a balancer on Front and Rear01:11
AfdalSo I guess it's recognizing all my speakers01:11
AfdalWell I don't have a sound card, it's just audio from my motherboard01:11
gnarfacewell that's what i mean, same thing in this context01:12
gnarfaceon mine, i have to actually put in a custom ~/.asoundrc to make it see more than 2 channels by default01:12
gnarfacebut pulseaudio is still wonky01:12
gnarfacemight be related to driver issues01:12
fsmithredsimilar problem in this thread: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=400201:13
fsmithredlooks like pages 4,5 maybe have solutions01:13
AfdalI mean it does seem like Alsa's mixing setup mirrors Pulse's mixing setup, which is good01:13
AfdalWhen I alter the mixing in one mixing program, the other recognizes the alteration properly01:14
gnarfacethat is probably because you're looking at pulseaudio controls through alsmaixer, rather than the real hardware controls, but i'm not sure01:17
joergafaik PA used alsa soundcards anyway02:39
ErRandirAfdal: run "alsactl store" after altering your settings, but before a reboot09:33
GNUmoonHi, I'm on Chimaera where libhandy-1-dev is on version 1.0.3.2. But I want the newer libhandy-1-dev 1.6.2-1. Is there a way to install the "sid" version in Chimaera?  Ref: https://pkgs.org/download/libhandy-1-dev13:16
jjakobGNUmoon: usually no, there are usually dependencies on newer system libraries, even if you get it to install, it may be linked against a newer version of libc so it will not run13:26
jjakobyou can however upgrade your chimaera to the rolling release13:27
GNUmoonjjakob: yeah, I guess it wouldn't be that easy :)13:27
GNUmoonrolling release... that's interesting.13:28
jjakobI've tried it for various things in the past. sometimes it was possible, sometimes not, it was a big mess in any case13:28
jjakobthe "sid" release of devuan. I don't know how they called it.13:28
GNUmoonjjakob, I like avoiding a messed up system....been there, done that...not fun :)13:29
jjakobeven when it was possible, it required downloading the entire dependency chain by hand and installing it in the right order with dpkg13:30
jjakobdownload the main pkg, try to install it, see what dep it can't find, download and try to install that, repeat13:30
GNUmoonThanks jjakob. I'll leave it for now. I'll install sid / rolling devuan to try it out.13:35
fsmithredGNUmoon, other option is to backport the version you want.13:37
fsmithredwhich could be easy or difficult. It varies.13:37
u-amarsh04I'm alright being on the bleeding edge, one could have unstable available but not used by default, if one sets apt preferences appropriately, see man apt_preferences (5)13:51
u-amarsh04but then again I use aptitude rather than apt and don't mind spending a while manually selecting my bleeding edge versus stable preferences how I want them13:52
fsmithredGNUmoon, instructions for backporting: https://wiki.debian.org/SimpleBackportCreation13:55
fsmithredu-amarsh04, yeah, I have one daedalus install with ceres pinned to a low priority.13:55
fsmithredUntil bookworm goes into freeze, there will be frequent updates.13:56
grimlordhello anybody here using spotify-client14:40
ham5urg_What s the password for user devuan in live iso images?16:28
ham5urg_'devuan' :/16:31
targzham5urg_: i'm not sure... 'live'?16:44
golinuxham5urg_: https://files.devuan.org/devuan_chimaera/desktop-live/README_desktop-live.txt16:59
brocashelmgnumoon, jjakob: unstable seems "uncertain" for most people, but i can speak from personal experience that as long as you know what you're getting yourself into, it's actually pretty rock solid. have packages like apt-listbugs installed to warn you of any potential breakages. i've switched to ceres years ago and haven't been convinced at all to go back to stable (other than in the scenario i'd like to not update daily/weekly, but that's18:24
brocashelmfor a specific use case)18:25
brocashelmin fact, i'll even say unstable is more reliable than testing. anytime breakages occur, unstable gets those fixes immediately before being backported to testing, IIRC18:28
jjakobbrocashelm: you mean unstable is good of you update frequently, not if you maybe don't upgrade for a couple months18:36
jjakobor is it good for both. I use debian sid and gentoo so I do prefer the rolling release model for my personal machines. I'm not so sure about it for a company server use case.18:38
brocashelmjjakob: yeah, better to update at least once a week (depending; it's mostly small patches applied to packages)18:40
brocashelmyou can technically get away with using an outdated unstable (by a few months), as long as everything loads as it should18:41
jjakobYeah, since we maintain servers for other companies as well, and if they don't have the money for us to upgrade often, or refuse to, they won't get upgrades. Our own servers get upgraded at least every couple months.18:42
jjakobI might try using ceres for some of the non critical servers18:43
brocashelmfor desktop/power users, unstable is more flexible (although arch/artix and gentoo would be better choices, unless you prefer apt like me)18:43
brocashelmi've used ceres for years and only had a few issues; all fixable, as long as you have experience with gnu/linux troubleshooting18:44
brocashelmthey were very far and few between, though18:45
brocashelmmaybe two grave bugs (apt-listbugs notifies you; you can install or dodge that specific package)18:45
brocashelmit's a good branch if you like newer packages while preferring the debian/devuan style of dependability. "unstable" just sounds scary because it implies constant breakages and whatnot; it's just that updates come in often to help prepare for the next LTS release18:47
