gandhii_didn't work... or I just don't know what I am doing00:57
rrq"F1 = choose session type" .. is that what you look for?01:16
rrq(i.e. function key F1)01:16
golinuxgandhii: Yes . . . how to choose the session is right on the slim login screen as rrq described.01:31
golinuxhttps://dev1galaxy.org/files/deepsea-slim-sm.png01:31
golinuxI have also heard that slim can be a bit unreliable for sessions. I don't use that feature so can't speak from personal experience.01:32
fsmithredgandhii, were there any choices other than xfce when you ran that command? What other desktops are installed?02:03
fsmithredupdate-alternatives --configure x-window-manager02:04
fsmithredif you just have a window manager. That worked for me to choose jwm, but it loses its default status if I go into xfce.02:05
XenguyLinux is... coooooooooooooolllllllllllllllllllll03:58
XenguyThat is all03:59
NeverAloneIt is indeed04:11
Xenguy  Been a journey, still lovin' it04:13
HelenahHi14:04
HelenahI need some help finding the *_server.iso image for chimaera. I've been rummaging around in here but can't seem to find it: https://pkgmaster.devuan.org/devuan/dists/chimaera/main/installer-amd64/current/images/14:05
HelenahHAH, found it! :D14:10
Helenahhttps://files.devuan.org/devuan_chimaera/installer-iso/devuan_chimaera_4.0.0_amd64_server.iso14:10
furrymcgeethe first links to mini.iso images with debian-installer14:15
HelenahWhy does the installation disc need to constantly try touching /var/run/br1tty-Xorg? It will only say "No such file or directory" because part of the path is missing...14:20
Helenahdoesn't exist14:21
HelenahWill this stop touching?14:21
HelenahI've entered a busybox shell to see what the problem is but it's just spamming this all over the cli...14:23
Helenah"Requires more RAM than documented" according to searches.14:25
Helenah.14:25
HelenahThis can't be run in 512 MB RAM? I only want to run an IRCd...14:25
Wonka.oO( https://openwrt.org/packages/pkgdata/ngircd )14:28
HelenahWonka: I'm going to be using chary.14:30
HelenahI just need to get Devuan to install.14:30
HelenahI'm sure I ran chary in 32 MB RAM not long ago.14:30
HelenahSo why am I needing 1024 MB these days?14:30
HelenahI'm gonna look for another distro. Thank you for your time.14:31
fsmithredHelenah, you might have better luck with the minimal-live iso14:32
HelenahOh14:32
fsmithredI can test that in qemu for you with 51214:32
fsmithredhang on14:32
Helenahfsmithred: Thanks :D14:32
HelenahThat's if you already have it downloaded.14:33
fsmithredlol, yes.14:33
HelenahI don't want you doing the same effort I could do myself.14:33
fsmithredI made it.14:33
HelenahAh!14:33
HelenahNice14:33
HelenahBut yea I should be able to run a non-systemd distro in 512 MB RAM.14:33
furrymcgeethe mini iso should probably fit14:33
fsmithred2G ram is required for encrypted root fs now.14:33
Helenaho.O14:34
HelenahThat's weird... lol14:34
WonkaI am running raspbian on an Raspberry Pi 1B, where `free -h` announces total memory of 303Mi14:34
HelenahThis is a VPS.14:35
Helenahon my hypervisor14:35
HelenahI'm extremely conservative.14:35
HelenahBut I'm extremely secure too.14:35
Wonkarun a bigger VPS and docker containers in it?14:35
HelenahThough... I find it hard to believe that encrypted root fs should require 2G RAM when in the past it wouldn't have.14:35
Wonkaalso... it should be possible. Haven't installed a Devuan vm for some time now, though.14:36
HelenahI'm not saying it doesn't require it, but I don't believe it ha to.14:36
Helenah*has14:36
HelenahThe concept itself14:36
HelenahEither way I'm gonna strip this system back a bit.14:36
fsmithredare you new to this? Everything always gets bigger with each release.14:37
Helenahfsmithred: No14:37
HelenahI've been stripping systems since 2005 and I'm aware14:37
fsmithredok. I just booted minimal-live with 512, no problems.14:38
HelenahIn 2015 I ran a server with only 32 MB RAM and it was hosting an IRCd (Charybdis) and IRC services (Atheme)14:38
HelenahThanks14:38
Helenah512 will do :)14:38
fsmithredfair warning: it does not use the usual debian/devuan iinstaller14:38
HelenahI don't give a flying crap about an installer, it's insignificant. lol14:38
HelenahThank you. :)14:38
* Helenah looks for mini install14:39
Helenah12:32:19  fsmithred | Helenah, you might have better luck with the minimal-live iso14:39
HelenahOkies14:39
Helenahthanks14:39
HelenahGot it, thanks14:39
fsmithredgimme a yell if you need help14:39
HelenahWAIT14:40
fsmithredthe installer copies the running system14:40
HelenahThis won't install a WM/DE, right?14:40
furrymcgeedebootstrap if you dont need installer14:40
HelenahIt doesn't say "server" in the filename.14:40
fsmithredno, literally rsync copy of the running system14:40
HelenahAh :)14:40
fsmithredwhich has no xorg14:40
HelenahPhew!14:40
* Helenah almost paniced14:40
Helenahlol14:41
fsmithredit does have non-free firmware installed, and there's a script to remove it.14:41
Helenahhmm14:41
Helenahfsmithred: Wow nice14:41
HelenahCause only free firmware required14:41
HelenahThere is nothing special on this VM14:41
fsmithredyeah, but there are devices out there with no ethernet port14:42
fsmithredthat's why we do that14:42
HelenahYes14:42
Helenah"no ethernet port"14:42
HelenahWHA?!14:42
Helenaho.O14:42
* Helenah pukes14:42
fsmithredlot of new laptops are wireless only14:42
Helenah.14:42
HelenahSo lets say wireless don't work and it's always the case that ethernet most likely will...14:43
HelenahDoes one have to punch the crap out of their brain in the process of fixing things? lol14:43
fsmithredusb ethernet dongle14:43
HelenahDamn manufacturers these days lol14:43
fsmithredHelenah, login:password for live isos   devuan:devuan  and  root:toor14:45
fsmithredAs root, run:  refractainstaller14:45
Helenahthanks14:52
HelenahAh, this feels like a walk in the park! <314:54
HelenahThanks :D14:55
Helenahfsmithred: I feel nostalgic! <314:59
WonkaBack when Things Just Worked :)14:59
HelenahHow do I continue after partitioning disk? I used cfdisk, I press 4 to continue and it says "GParted is not installed"15:00
HelenahYes, I'm unable to proceed, it won't listen to my input.15:02
HelenahNvm, finally figured it. There is a bug, not sure where to report.15:05
HelenahIt's a minor bug though, you can work around it.15:05
fsmithredHelenah, I think you selected the wrong thing15:13
fsmithredregarding gparted15:13
fsmithredsubmit@bugs.devuan.org descriptive subject line, first line of text says, Package: refractainstaller-base15:14
HelenahI selected 3 for cfdisk, that pops up but when you have finished and you fall back to that prompt then it takes no notice of input.15:14
HelenahThanks15:14
HelenahI'll do that in a bit.15:14
HelenahWhy is it recommended to disable sudo? It's a more secure way of executing commands as root. If you do "su root" for example then you are a risk of forgetting to do "exit" once you're finished while sudo will eventually time out leaving anyone to come along no access to the root shell. That time out can be configured to be shorter too.15:17
fsmithredthe installer is inherited from a respin distro. So to answer quickly, historical reasons15:18
fsmithredmore important, I don't recall if the installer in the iso has a particular bugfix or not. You may end up in the sudo group even if you don't want to.15:19
hagbardI have this in my .bashrc, instead of sudo: suc() { su -s /bin/bash -c "$(printf "%q " "$@")"; }15:20
HelenahAh15:21
gnarfacesu doesn't cache authentication though and requires a separate password, it's inherently more secure than the stock sudo config just because of that15:21
gnarfacesudo "can be configured to..." isn't the same thing as the state it's shipped in15:22
fsmithredsudo is meant for fine-grained privs.15:22
gnarfaceor the state most people use it in15:22
Helenahhmm15:23
HelenahYeah the state it's shipped in is terrible.15:23
HelenahThat I will agree with.15:23
gnarfacebut if you were just going to set the root password to the same thing as your user password anyway then you probably wouldn't gain much by disabling sudo15:24
Helenahfsmithred: Yep15:24
Helenahgnarface: That's silly though.15:24
HelenahThat just means your own user might as well be root...15:24
HelenahSame for sudo configured to not prompt for password.15:25
gnarfacewell, no, not quite, because filesystem permissions will still differ but it does lower security15:25
HelenahAnd I've known people do that, I've then pointed out the bad in it.15:25
Helenahgnarface: I was more meaning if15:25
Helenahone was to know the password of the user then think "Oh lets try passing to root"15:25
gnarfacethe truth is, you shouldn't be planning for unlocked terminals either way15:25
Helenahhmm15:26
HelenahRight got a boot problem and not sure how or what I've done wrong. lol15:26
HelenahBut the hard disk isn't bootable it seems. hmm15:26
gnarfacedoes it say why?15:27
HelenahIt's unbootable so the BIOS literally said why. :D15:27
HelenahIt hangs on booting from it.15:27
HelenahSuggestive that... GRUB is misconfigured probs.15:27
fsmithreddid you get any questions about grub?15:28
HelenahBut I don't understand, I told the installer to install GRUB to /dev/vda115:28
fsmithredin the installer15:28
HelenahYes, whether or not I want to have grub installed and to where.15:28
HelenahSo I put /dev/vda115:28
fsmithredwhy vda1?15:28
fsmithredbetter to put it in mbr15:29
HelenahBecause that's what the device reported as in cfdisk.15:29
fsmithredin /dev/vda15:29
HelenahWhich is normal for a VirtIO disk15:29
Helenahfsmithred: That's basically what I said...15:29
Helenahfsmithred: I didn't create a /boot partition because I didn't want one. I didn't need one.15:31
fsmithredis vda1 the root partition?15:31
HelenahYes15:31
HelenahThat's literally the one and only disk15:31
Helenahand the / partition is on there15:31
fsmithredok, so doesn't vda have a master boot record?15:31
fsmithredI use sda... in my virt disks.15:32
fsmithredI didn't think vda was different except for the name15:32
HelenahIn cfdisk I selected GPT15:32
fsmithredgpt with uefi or legacy bios?15:32
HelenahVirtIO has never shown as sda for me, ever15:32
Helenahlegacy BIOS15:32
fsmithredok, so second problem is you need a bios_grub partition15:33
HelenahOh15:33
fsmithredat least 1MB size, not formatted15:33
HelenahThanks.15:33
fsmithredin gdisk, that's ef0215:34
fsmithredprobably same in cfdisk15:34
fsmithredI never used cfdisk for gpt15:34
fsmithredHelenah, are you going to reinstall or try to fix it from the live session?15:39
fsmithredeither way, if you're not using uefi, you'll need a bootloader in /dev/vda15:45
fsmithredor somewhere else to chain to the one in /dev/vda115:47
fsmithredafk, back soon15:48
HelenahThis just simply won't boot :/15:59
HelenahI changed the partition table to MBR...16:00
Helenaho.o16:00
HelenahReinstalled, no difference.16:00
HelenahI'm not sure why this is soo difficult. o.o16:00
HelenahI install Arch Linux on all my client machines and that doesn't even have an installer...16:00
HelenahOh well16:01
furrymcgeehttps://man.archlinux.org/listing/extra/arch-install-scripts/16:05
HelenahI'm gonna come back to this in a bit. It's bogging my brain. lol16:09
HelenahThank you once again for your support. :)16:09
gnarface you changed it to MBR type partitioning and you installed grub on /dev/vba instead of /dev/vba1 right?16:18
HelenahOH16:21
HelenahDamn16:21
HelenahI normally install on /dev/vda16:21
Helenahbut... woops16:21
HelenahGUI slows me down, brain races ahead, mistakes happen. Thanks16:21
HelenahTUI too okies but thanks16:22
HelenahBooted :D16:35
HelenahThanks16:35
spac3rhi, i upgraded beowulf xfce to chimaera on a mac mini 3,1. This solved the flicker and tearing at the bottom of the screen and grub loaded without the prompt. New was no network. Also colours were off in xfce, but not in video playback. Couldn't solve the 2 issues and did a clean install of ascii xfce. Ascii works out of the box, it boots and runs17:17
spac3rfaster than chimaera and beowulf and much better than Mint 18. Support for debian stretch LTS stopped end of june 2022, any chance ascii will get updates?17:17
fsmithredspac3r, most of devuan is unchanged from debian. So when LTS stops, that's it.17:25
fsmithredif you were using wicd in beowulf, you would have lost that on upgrade to chimaera, where wicd doesn't exist. (Except for a metapackage which installs network-manager)17:26
spac3rfsmithred, i'd have to check again, i don't recall which network manager i used on beowulf. ip link show showed wireless card and usb0 down and couldn't change that17:44
fsmithreddid you install the default desktop in beowulf? That would have given you xfce and wicd17:45
fsmithredand should have pulled in n-m automatically. If you installed wicd-gtk manually, you would miss the transition to n-m.17:46
spac3ryes, default desktop17:46
fsmithredthat's weird, unless somehow the wicd metapackage got removed.17:49
fsmithredif you try it again, and you have no way to use a wire, switch to network-manager or connman before the upgrade.17:50
spac3rthanks, i'll keep that for reference. Steps were clean install ascii -> upgrade to beowulf -> upgrade chimaera, default settings17:52
spac3rit's unfortunate security updates aren't ported to older distros17:55
fsmithredSome are - mostly kernel. Check the debian package security info.17:57
spac3rfsmithred, did a quick search, for ascii in sources.list do i add the line 'deb http://security.debian.org/ stretch/updates main contrib non-free' ?18:14
fsmithredspac3r, no. Use ascii-security until ascii gets moved to archive.devuan.org18:16
fsmithredand then there will only be one line for ascii18:16
fsmithreddid you not have an ascii-security line to begin with?18:17
spac3rSorry, yes it has 'deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged ascii-security main contrib non-free'18:19
fsmithreddon't use any debian repos directly. That's like having unprotected sex with a stranger.18:21
spac3rCheck. So the devuan line currently updates security for ascii or? Is there a way to know when it's eol and possibly a new a new line is available18:25
spac3r-a new18:25
fsmithredwe're already past the date when debian said that stretch would be archived18:35
fsmithredand it hasn't18:36
spac3rUpgraded ascii on the mini to beowulf w/ default settings and the issues i had at the first try are gone. Responsiveness, network connection, wicd, dm fine, no tearing and flickering \0/ Sticking to the 4.19 kernel as long as possible21:02
spac3rJust the grub prompt came back after beowulf boots. How do you load grub.cfg automatically?21:03
gnarfacespac3r: i think you just set the timeout to 021:18
gnarfacecheck the docs21:18
gnarfaceoh, you mean it prompts you instead of actually running the menu?21:19
gnarfaceseems weird21:19
gnarfaceis it the auto-generated config or di you edit it?21:19
gnarfacedid*21:19
spac3ryes, switching on mini -> grub> _21:20
spac3rcorrection, grub prompt before devuan loads21:21
spac3ri didn't edit it so auto-generated probably21:21
gnarfacethat usually only happens when something is wrong with the config21:23
spac3ri enter grub> configfile (hd3,gpt1)efi/devuan/grub.cfg -> devuan boots21:23
gnarfaceoh, i wonder if it's an efi thing21:23
gnarfaceyou might be missing a package for that21:23
gnarfacelook for a package with grub and efi both in the name21:24
gnarfaceif you already have that, then make sure the boot entry is right in the config21:24
gnarfacehmm, wait i guess it'd have to be21:24
gnarfacefor that matter if you're missing the package i was thinking of, i'm not sure manually running the config would work eeither21:25
gnarfacethat's really weird21:25
spac3rascii didn't have this issue21:25
gnarfaceyou sure the upgrade is complete?21:26
gnarfacerun this: apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade21:26
gnarfacefsmithred might have a better idea21:28
fsmithredhuh? reading...21:28
spac3ri'll do that. i followed the steps upgrading ascii to beowolf to the letter. Neofetch: OS: Linux 3 (beowulf). Kernel: 4.19.0-21-amd6421:29
fsmithredis it a uefi system?21:30
fsmithredgrub-install && update-grub21:32
fsmithredif it's not uefi, then grub-install /dev/sda (or wherever) then update-grub21:32
spac3rapt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade : 0 installed, removed, 0 not upgraded21:41
spac3rgrub-install && update-grub : installation finished. No error reported21:41
spac3rbash: update-grub: command not found21:41
fsmithredoh?21:45
fsmithreddpkg -l | grep grub21:45
fsmithredshould be grub-efi-amd64 and grub-efi-amd64-bin21:46
spac3rlooking how to find uefi status21:46
fsmithredls /sys/firmware/efi21:47
fsmithredif it doesn't exist, you booted legacy21:47
spac3rdpkg -l | grep grub: grub-efi-amd64 and grub-efi-amd64-bin are listed21:47
spac3rsys/firmware/efi contains 3 folders, 5 plain text documents, no file names w/ uefi in it21:51
fsmithredthat's ok21:51
fsmithredthe efi dir would not exist in a legacy bios boot21:51
fsmithredI would not expect a path problem if any of those commands worked, and it looks like all but one did.21:52
fsmithredit should be /usr/sbin/update-grub   See if that exists21:52
fsmithredif either of those is missing, make sure grub-common and grub2-common are installed21:54
spac3rgrub-install -> shutdown -r now -> grub prompt -> devuan -> this is new: wicd: No wireless networks found -> sudo service networking restart -> wicd: No wireless networks found -> wicd wired: connects22:06
spac3rusr/sbin/update-grub is present22:07
fsmithredok, so maybe you used 'su' to get root and your path is not complete22:07
fsmithreduse 'su -'22:07
fsmithredor...22:07
fsmithredecho $PATH first and after doing that to see the difference22:07
fsmithred"first" meaning root as su22:08
fsmithredor else use the full path to the command to run it.22:09
fsmithredupdate-grub will create the boot menu22:09
spac3rlike this? $ su - grub-install && update-grub22:10
fsmithredno22:10
fsmithredsu -22:10
fsmithredthen give root password22:10
fsmithredthen run the grub commands. How did grub-install succeed and update-grub did not?22:11
fsmithredthey're both in /usr/sbin/22:12
spac3rsu -22:15
spac3r[root]  grub-install && update-grub22:15
spac3rno error this time - > reboot -> grub prompt :-/22:15
fsmithredat grub prompt...22:17
fsmithredecho $prefix22:17
fsmithredafter you get into the system, look to see what is in /boot/efi/EFI/22:18
fsmithredand run efibootmgr to see which bootloader is listed as first in boot order.22:18
spac3rboot/efi/EFI/devuan contains fbx64.efi grubx64.efi shimx64.efi grub.cfg bootx64.csv22:21
fsmithredoh22:23
fsmithredapt remove grub-efi-amd64-signed22:23
fsmithredand then I think you have to do grub-install and update-grub again22:23
spac3rgrub> echo $prefix22:24
spac3r(hd3,gpt1)/boot/grub22:24
fsmithreddoes that make sense for where stuff is installed?22:24
fsmithredfirst partition of fourth hard disk22:25
spac3rremove grub-efi-amd64-signed: ok22:33
spac3rgparted displays sda1 sda2 sda3. sda1 is fat32, mount point: /boot/efi. Size: 512 MiB, Flags: boot,esp.22:33
spac3rI don't see hd3 or gpt122:33
spac3r*dev/sda122:34
fsmithredhow many disks are there?22:36
spac3rContents /boot/grub/: x86_64-efi (folder) grub.cfg grubenv unicode.pf222:36
spac3rphysical disks? 1 internal ssd22:37
fsmithredyou know your way around grub command line at all?22:37
spac3rno22:39
fsmithredseems odd that grub thinks there are four disks22:39
spac3ri followed the installation and upgrade manual to the letter22:42
fsmithredok, next time you boot into the system, run 'dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64'22:43
fsmithredmaybe that will fix it22:43
spac3rwireless networking up again22:43
fsmithredwhat fixed that?22:44
spac3rreboots, wicd is set to automatic connection to wifi22:45
spac3rin terminal $ sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd6422:51
spac3r'The following Linux command line was extracted from /etc/default/grub or 'kopt' parameter in GRUB Legacy's menu.lst'22:51
spac3rLinux command line:22:51
spac3rIs allowed empty, right?22:51
fsmithredyes22:56
fsmithredmenu.lst is pretty old22:56
spac3rThank you very much for your time22:59
spac3rNext setting: Linux default command line: quiet22:59
spac3rOk?22:59
fsmithredyeah, quiet is ok22:59
fsmithredbrb23:00
fsmithredwhat does efibootmgr show for first one in boot order?23:04
spac3rstill with grub-efi-amd64 'Force extra installation to EFI removable media path? Yes/No'23:06
fsmithredmaybe yes in this case. Normally you shouldn't need that, but maybe you do.23:07
spac3rok23:07
spac3rnext setting is 'Update NVRAM variables to autom. boot into Debian?' Default Yes?23:08
fsmithreduh...23:08
fsmithredis there a /boot/efi/EFI/debian?23:09
fsmithredI guess yes23:10
fsmithredget through this and then lets see how many bootloaders you have and what the order is.23:10
spac3ryes there is, the same files as in /boot/efi/EFI/devuan w/ diff. modification dates23:11
fsmithredok23:11
fsmithredand one called BOOT now?23:11
fsmithredwhich dir has later mod times?23:12
fsmithredor files23:12
spac3rin both folders a file BOOTX64.CSV, the one in devuan folder is more recent23:12
spac3rBOOTX64.CSV in devuan seems to have been placed after the grub-install && update-grub command23:13
spac3rshould i copy the files in the devuan folder to the debian folder and select Yes in the setting 'Update NVRAM variables to automatically boot into Debian?'23:15
fsmithredno23:15
fsmithredefibootmgr will show you the boot order23:15
fsmithredand might let you change it23:15
spac3rsudo efibootmgr23:21

spac3rBoot0002* devuan23:21
spac3rBoot0080* Mac OS X23:21
spac3rBootFFFF*23:21
fsmithredok, did you try a reboot yet?23:22
fsmithredoh23:23
fsmithredhow old is this mac?23:23
spac3rRebooted and grub prompt23:24
spac3rMaybe remnants of previous distros mess up grub?23:24
fsmithred2011 or so?23:24
fsmithreddid you say that a few days ago?23:24
spac3rearly 200923:24
spac3rmac mini 3,123:24
fsmithredis it one like some of the macbook pros around that time that would allow a 64-bit OS but needed a 32-bit uefi bootloader?23:24
fsmithredyou might need to install grub-efi-ia3223:25
fsmithreddon't do that unless you know it's right for your hardware23:26
spac3ri'd have to check23:26
spac3rWhen i upgraded beowulf to chimaera grub booted automatically and devuan started straight away23:26
fsmithredok, one other trick if it doesn't reboot to a working boot menu23:27
fsmithredgrub-install --bootloader-id=debian23:27
fsmithredand then update-grub. That's normally a trick to use if you have the -signed version installed23:27
fsmithredwhich is only needed for secure-boot23:28
spac3rthe successor of my early 2009 mini uses 32-bit EFI, see https://www.zealfortechnology.com/2018/07/revive-old-mac-mini-2009-with-linux.html23:40
spac3rSo grub-efi-ia32 would be safe to install?23:40
fsmithredI would think it's not necessary if it booted ok in ascii and chimaera with the 64-bit grub23:49
spac3rchimaera is too heavy and i couldn't fix the colours and network. With beowulf the mini is responsive and seems to get updates until june 2024. All good, thanks for your help and patience fsmithred23:59
