blizzowI have a new Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 5 laptop. I installed devuan on a USB stick first and cannot get wifi to start up. I was getting messages about missing iwlwifi-so-a0-gf-a0-XX.ucode.01:54
gnarfacewhich installer image did you put on the USB? the netinstall and live images should both already include iwlwifi01:55
blizzowI reinstalled linux firmware nonfree. That didn't work so I found a couple copies of github. https://github.com/endlessm/linux-firmware01:55
blizzowgnarface, I used daedalus and there are already a bunch of iwlwifi ucode files in /lib/firmware.01:55
gnarfacethere should be an actual package for iwlwifi01:56
gnarfaceis that laptop a very new model?01:56
gnarfacehttps://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/policy-query.html?c=package&q=firmware-iwlwifi&x=submit01:57
blizzowEven after copying over the files from github, no luck.  The laptop was built days ago but is a gen 5. I think they're up to gen10 now.01:57
gnarfacehere, make sure you already have this too01:57
gnarfacethere's every possibility it's actually missing something but usually they are better than that01:58
blizzowI had already installed firwmware-iwlwifi as well. No joy. How do I make sure I'm downloading daedalus amd64 from that package view link. If I click on the latest version, it only has one link to a download02:03
gnarfacei'm not sure if you can, did you try appending :amd6402:04
gnarface?02:04
gnarfaceto the search parameter02:04
gnarfacehmm, seems to ignore that02:05
gnarfaceoh wait02:05
gnarface_all02:05
gnarfacethere's no arch for these files, they're firmware files02:05
blizzowI think that _all would be where the amd64 goes. I guess I will get down to business of trying to get the laptop to boot efistub and use a wireless USB stick for a while.02:06
blizzoworrr, I could copy lib/firmware ucode files from my working voidlinux installation?02:06
gnarfaceyou're using a stock kernel too? if so, the appropriate thing to do would be to file the bug upstream at debian, if it hasn't been already02:07
blizzowwell, I'll be back in a few minutes as I reboot02:08
global_eliteswill Devuan with MATE DE run ok on a laptop with 4GB RAM?12:57
djphglobal_elites: "okay"12:57
djphyour real problem is gonna be stuff like web-browsing12:58
unixman_homeglobal_elites, I am running Devuan with MATE on a NUC with 16 GB RAM (15 GB usable after video setup takes its share). Occasionally OOM killer kills the desktop session if I keep Firefox running too long. So, I believe 4 GB is going to be tight for web browsing. That said, if you are careful with your browsing and don't keep a browser up too long, probably "okay".20:50
golinuxglobal_elites: I am running Xfce on 8 GB ram. Had to upgrade from 4 GB several years ago.21:41
golinuxI am currently using 5.1 GB and not doing much of anything except multiple browsers and windows open. . .21:42
golinuxI agree that 4 GB might not work too well in 2022 with a full blown desktop.21:44
brocashelmxfce is not that lightweight anymore, sadly. if you're using 4 gb or less of ram, you can try lxqt, trinity (tde), lxde, or a tiling window manager like i3, awesome, or fluxbox21:45
Unit193The problem is firefox I'd say, I'm running Xfce on 2g but firefox is such a hog. :/21:46
brocashelmfirefox and other modern browsers, too21:46
brocashelmyou could try alternatives like pale moon or librewolf (runs a lot better IMO)21:47
brocashelmalso, the type and speed of ram is an important factor here. ddr2 is ancient, ddr3 is already old (but still reliable), and ddr4 is getting much cheaper. anything less than 2400 mhz will be a slow, miserable experience :)21:51
eyalrozHello devuaners, I'd like to ask for help/advice regarding an SDL2 issue.22:24
eyalrozI want to build the Battle for Wesnoth. To do that, I need libsdl2-mixer-dev. The Debian package for that one depends on libfluidsynth-dev, and that in turn depends on... libsystemd-dev. Not quite sure why that is...22:25
eyalrozIs there something I can do other than building and installing libfluidsynth, then building and installing libsdl2-mixer (or all of SDL2)?22:26
peterrooneyeyalroz: that may be the case on debian, but I'm not seeing that dependancy in chimaera - just a dep on libfluidsynth.23:27
eyalrozpeterrooney: I didn't experience this in chimaera23:27
eyalrozI'm seeing this with daedalus23:28
