plasma41rrq: So I have a new laptop that I was going to install the new ISOs onto yesterday while I was at the library, but I experimented a little too much with options in the UEFI setup utility and ended up screwing up the laptop's ability to boot into anything but the preinstalled OS. It wasn't until I got home and removed the underside with a screwdriver and physically disconnected the battery that I was able to clear out what I had mess22:39
plasma41ed up in the UEFI. I'm now trying again to install the ISOs.22:39
plasma41rrq: I pressed 'S' at the grub menu of the Beowulf netinst ISO to test the speech synthesis install. The installer was unable to detect a sound card on this laptop. Again, this is a UEFI system which AFAICT does not have a CSM for BIOS compatibility.22:53
plasma41rrq: Some fonts appear to be missing on the language select screen.22:55
rrqbeowulf on new laptop might make an interesting expeience. but the glyphs should have been there ... they would be missing also on daedalus I guess22:58
rrqthe daedalus preview installer I mean22:59
plasma41rrq: Yes, I'm not ruling out the possibility that the cause is simply "running older software on new hardware" or "UEFI is hot garbage".23:04
rrqthe installer kernel would be 4.something so might not have the modules for the sound card23:06
plasma41I have open the PDF of the UEFI spec this laptop's UEFI supposedly conforms to. I just happened to glance at the page count: 2637 pages!!!23:13
golinuxWhat a scam . . .23:14
brocashelmi always prefer to go with legacy bios23:15
plasma412637 pages just to document how to load and run an operating system. My Bible fits in just 879 pages!23:17
rrqone highlight of UEFI is that, if I read it right, it allows an asyncronous process be started and running at the side of the OS23:19
plasma41Yay?23:20
brocashelmhooray for modern technology23:22
bgstack15rrq: that just makes it sound like it's capable of running stuff that you don't know about. Oh wait...23:23
plasma41rrq: So on the speech synthesis install (I've got no audio, but I can still read the prompts on the screen) if the installer is unable to connect to a mirror server, it will just loop through asking you to pick a different mirror server ad infinitum. There's no option to just skip downloading additional packages until later and to proceed with the base install. Using Beowulf netinst23:26
plasma41restarting the install process using the advanced install option this time...23:27
rrqmmm I thought you have to use the "go back" option somwhere to eventually arrive at the "steps menu", and then step forward there23:27
rrqbtw btw, the newest key fixing ressurrected the old installer isos23:28
plasma41I don't think the speech synthesis installer has a "steps menu"?23:28
rrqcan't "go back" ?23:29
plasma41rrq: There's no option to go back that I'm aware of.23:29
rrqhmm; I thought it used the standard flow, and just added speech over it23:30
plasma41rrq: Really? Does debian-installer automatically update from mirrors with expired keys anyway?23:31
rrqthe expiry was on the 2017 devuan key which probably was introduced for amprolla version 323:33
plasma41rrq: It (speech synthesis) uses a slightly simplified flow, IIUC. It seems to strip out any box-drawing characters and just writes to stdout as though it where a hardcopy teletype terminal.23:34
rrqinteresting. yes that's the serial line installer... you should get the same presentations with a console=ttyS0 parameter and a serial console23:35
rrqi.e. that vaeriation is in how debconf presentss the dialogs; not in which they are or waht they contain23:36
plasma41The offline speech synthesis infinite loop problem may be an issue in Debian as well. I'll need to try doing a23:37
plasma41The offline speech synthesis infinite loop problem may be an issue in Debian as well. I'll need to try doing an offline speech synthesis install with a Debian ISO to check.23:37
plasma41rrq: Ok, in the expert install, all of the fonts render properly in the language selection screen. It appears the missing glyphs was just an issue with the serial console output which isn't too surprising, ASCII/Latin-1 vs Unicode and all.23:42
rrqright. yeah that branch of the test case tree is probably investigated less than it should23:43
plasma41I like overturning rocks ignored by others. :-)23:44
plasma41I've got to head out the door. ttyl, afk23:45
