onefang | G'day. Some of you might know me from other Devuan channels. I'm mostly gonna lurk for a while, but my main reason for being here is I've decided I want to build a PiHole + media centre + Devuan build host. I'm also considering a virtual ARM Devuan build host on my super desktop (a 64 core AMD Ryzen Threadripper with 256 GB RAM). Wondering which would be the faster build host. B-) | 17:23 |
---|---|---|
onefang | I haven't even begun to research which ARM box to get / build. The more open the hardware the better though. | 17:23 |
onefang | Any one that has seen the latest Devuan meeting notes will know why and what is needed for the build host. | 17:24 |
* onefang starts lurking. | 17:24 | |
Tenkawa | onefang: | 17:25 |
Tenkawa | oops | 17:25 |
onefang | That's OK, I'm lurking, so that'll be the level of conversation to expect out of me. lol | 17:26 |
Tenkawa | onefang: prioritize those functions… on a arm soc those 3 can be multually exclusive | 17:26 |
onefang | Things like Pis are cheap enough, I could get two. | 17:26 |
Tenkawa | they can work together but they will need to be interworked | 17:26 |
Tenkawa | onefang: I run 9 PI's and 2 Odroids currently if that tells you anything lol | 17:27 |
Tenkawa | (6 of those PI's are a compile cluster though) | 17:28 |
onefang | Most of the time the media centre would be playing Groove Salad Internet radio station from Soma FM. | 17:28 |
Tenkawa | ok.. yeah that io won't even register | 17:28 |
Tenkawa | the main thing that hits is video | 17:28 |
onefang | I rarely watch video. | 17:29 |
onefang | I do already have two Olimex boards. One I own that died, the other belongs to a client, but has sat in a box for several years. | 17:30 |
Tenkawa | I had 2 olimex A20 but I threw those out ages ago | 17:30 |
Tenkawa | I have a radxa arriving today | 17:31 |
Tenkawa | it will be getting a devuan build | 17:32 |
onefang | The client never went ahead with that project, which was to convert an embedded device from x486 to ARM. I originally built the OS and application for his x486 version. | 17:32 |
Tenkawa | yeah been there done that…. quite frustrating | 17:33 |
onefang | At least he paid for both. B-) | 17:33 |
Tenkawa | thats good… I was working for a company that didn't always have a good enough "sales group" to actually get that done | 17:35 |
Tenkawa | we already have images ready to go for this new hardware ready to install today | 17:36 |
Tenkawa | how do you like that threadripper? | 17:37 |
onefang | For anyone that doesn't know me, I'm a semi-retired computer programmer / sysadmin. Been building computers since the early '80s, sometimes professionally. These days I'm the Devuan package mirror herder, and apt-panopticon author. | 17:37 |
Tenkawa | you should see my new build machine lol | 17:37 |
onefang | Is boasting about Threadrippers on topic here? lol | 17:37 |
Tenkawa | onefang: unlike the other channel we like talking | 17:38 |
Tenkawa | it gives good ideas and thoughts | 17:38 |
onefang | It was a bitch to put together, so I ended up calling it Superbitch. But most of the problem was tracking down a RAM problem, coz of faulty motherboard. | 17:39 |
Tenkawa | when things get on topic/serious then we focus | 17:39 |
Tenkawa | I recently went to a Apple M1 using Linux Aas a build machine | 17:39 |
Tenkawa | er | 17:40 |
Tenkawa | s/Aas/ARM vms | 17:40 |
onefang | 256 GB of RAM is 8 RAM sticks, and the problem was some of them wouldn't work when some RAM slats had sticks in them. So endless swapping of sticks trying to figure out if it was one of the sticks or one of the slots. | 17:40 |
Tenkawa | and it is perfect | 17:40 |
Tenkawa | kernel compile in 3 minutes | 17:40 |
Tenkawa | arm to arm native for me is the way since all I do is arm work | 17:41 |
onefang | Then endless days grinding it with memcheck. Which resulted in the PSU fan being stuck on now. | 17:41 |
Tenkawa | ouch | 17:41 |
onefang | So now there's a constant small whine from the PSU, which ironically enough is from a company called "be quiet!". lol | 17:41 |
Tenkawa | think it could just be a bearing you could replace (yeah I know… a pain to do) | 17:42 |
onefang | They weren't happy with the idea of "send me anew one then I'll send the old one back". And I wasn't happy with the idea of "I'll be without my new super desktop for month without the super PSU to go with it". | 17:43 |
* Tenkawa has done that a fair share number of times | 17:43 | |
onefang | Meh, I usually have at least two non computer fans running, I live in semi tropical Australia, it's good to have air moving. | 17:44 |
Tenkawa | onefang: were you evere in any of the video meetings I attended? | 17:44 |
Tenkawa | I can't remember | 17:44 |
onefang | Possible. I don't do the video part of the meetings anymore. | 17:44 |
Tenkawa | I will if called upon again | 17:45 |
onefang | Mostly bald guy, glasses, big greyish beard. | 17:45 |
Tenkawa | I'm a extremely long haired guy with glasses from the states | 17:45 |
Tenkawa | looks a lot younger than he is | 17:46 |
onefang | The only other teething problem was that the Beowulf kernel wasn't new enough to support the graphics card. That needed a backported kernel, drivers from a PPA, and a small hacked up package that was expecting a version less than the one supplied. | 17:46 |
Tenkawa | kernel = my forte | 17:47 |
Tenkawa | lol | 17:47 |
onefang | I got two dreadlcrks, one down to my ankles, but not visible in video meetings. | 17:47 |
Tenkawa | nice | 17:47 |
onefang | Er dreadlocks. | 17:47 |
Tenkawa | I "had" bangs to my knees but I cut them off when I was about 30 | 17:48 |
onefang | The other one would be the same length, but I wake up one morning and found half of it had broken off. A bit thin. | 17:48 |
onefang | After it was all working, I'm loving this Threadripper. | 17:48 |
Tenkawa | hey… I do have a devuan specific q… do you guys have any risc-v plans? | 17:48 |
onefang | Though wish I could have found ECC RAM for it, or at least RAM without RGBling I can't turn off. | 17:49 |
Tenkawa | not sure if you know/heard | 17:49 |
onefang | None that I know of, but there might be. | 17:49 |
Tenkawa | (trying to figure out if I want to invest or not in risc-v) | 17:49 |
Tenkawa | I want to make sure all of the distribs I deal with will be using or at least eval'ing it | 17:50 |
onefang | In a decades time, when it's time to replace this Threadripper, RISC-V might be performant enough to replace it. | 17:50 |
Tenkawa | indeed | 17:50 |
onefang | And since I'm happy building Linux for x486s, I can do the same for RISC-V. B-) | 17:51 |
Tenkawa | I'll be back in about 2 hrs.. time for an appt… cheers for now all | 17:51 |
onefang | See you. | 17:51 |
* onefang returns to lurking. | 17:51 | |
Tenkawa | bbialw | 17:51 |
Tenkawa | steev: hey you around? | 20:31 |
steev | si | 20:32 |
Tenkawa | hey.. was there anything specific you had to do to the radxa zero image at first to get it to run? | 20:34 |
steev | the one that c0rnelius gave me, i just wrote it to sdcard and plugged the sdcard in | 20:34 |
Tenkawa | (haven't got my unit yet but want to know if there's any gotchas to watch out for) | 20:34 |
Tenkawa | ok | 20:34 |
Tenkawa | post still says it suppose to be here by 9pm but I'm skeptical | 20:35 |
steev | the only gotcha that i know of, is that emmc uses a different load address for u-boot, so you seemingly can't use the same image, if you have u-boot on it | 20:35 |
Tenkawa | interesting | 20:35 |
steev | let me find | 20:35 |
steev | https://wiki.radxa.com/Zero/dev/u-boot | 20:36 |
Tenkawa | yeah I was reading that page | 20:36 |
Tenkawa | havent finished yet | 20:36 |
steev | there is also https://github.com/radxa/documentation/tree/master/rs102 | 20:37 |
steev | also also | 20:37 |
steev | the 2 that arrived for me appear to be 1.51, versus the two i have, seem to be 1.4 | 20:37 |
steev | and the 1.51 doesn't seem to do anything when you try to switch the LED triggers | 20:37 |
Tenkawa | interesting… | 20:38 |
Tenkawa | what emmc size is yours? | 20:38 |
Tenkawa | (since I know they put diff components based on that too) | 20:38 |
steev | i have 2 with 128GB emmc, 1 with 64GB and 1 with 8GB | 20:39 |
Tenkawa | yeah mine is a 128gb | 20:39 |
steev | 1 128 is 4, the 8 is 1.4, the 64 and other 128 are 1.51 | 20:39 |
Tenkawa | the one I have coming | 20:39 |
steev | is 4 -> is 1.4 | 20:39 |
Tenkawa | intriguing | 20:39 |
Tenkawa | really want it to get here so I can figure this out now | 20:40 |
c0rnelius | I can get the twiser os img to boot, but mine doesn't. | 20:41 |
c0rnelius | must be missing something here | 20:42 |
Tenkawa | I've rebuild that u-boot so I should be able to update "if needed" | 20:46 |
Tenkawa | yay an update 10 minutes ago… it finally made it to the usps distribution center… I "might" still get it today | 20:51 |
onefang | Half the time I'm tracking a package, I see it pass me by on the way to some other distribution centre. Sometimes passing me by on the way to another state. lol | 20:52 |
onefang | Oh, and one managed to go around the world twice. | 20:53 |
Tenkawa | onefang: yeah… its crazy how bad it is here… I'm in the middle of 3 large metros too which makes it even worse | 20:55 |
c0rnelius | Tenkawa: alright I got it | 21:16 |
c0rnelius | In my case I used twisteros to erase the emmc and then flashed my img to it, after which I booted the same img from sd and worked. I think maybe just erasing it and flashing mainline u-boot to the emmc would probs work? either way after that the img booted in seconds. | 21:18 |
c0rnelius | the initial flash to emmc from twister got fowled up, but seemed to do what was needed to get that old vendor u-boot shit off of it. | 21:19 |
c0rnelius | steev: does ur alsamixer work? because mine came right up. | 21:50 |
parabyte | Tenkawa, i finally got the uboot current git build working on the tegra 2, just to make you aware i am copying existing work out there, only different is i am not modding u-boot at all, im keeping it stock except for the extra headers and board files for the asus tf101 | 21:54 |
parabyte | i have configured u-boot for that board to boot syslinux compatible scripts | 21:54 |
c0rnelius | parabyte: here, some tarballs -> https://github.com/pyavitz/rootfs-tarballs/releases/tag/rootfs | 21:54 |
parabyte | oh fantastic thank you c0rnelius i will give them a go in a hour | 21:55 |
c0rnelius | np | 21:55 |
parabyte | let me show you what i been using, i have been using also chroot to make my own system image, but "i just aint got time for that"!!! | 21:55 |
parabyte | i have been using this, and from what i can tell lots of people been using this | 21:56 |
parabyte | https://sourceforge.net/projects/tf101-linux-images/files/ | 21:56 |
parabyte | u-boot is outdated, its all abit of a mess really on that site, no offence to who ever is making the effort to support this old board | 21:56 |
parabyte | i really appreciate them making the effort as i would of not had some of the information i required to pull all of this together | 21:57 |
parabyte | i am obviously referring to the devuan build on that site | 21:57 |
parabyte | also the rootfs is broken! config files been played with! | 21:58 |
Tenkawa | we know that fun | 21:58 |
Tenkawa | thats why we built our own | 21:58 |
parabyte | i couldnt figure out why i couldnt get nfs to install as a client, and it turned out that who ever is hosting those files went through alot of trouble removing lo interface | 21:58 |
Tenkawa | (more accurately a generator) | 21:59 |
parabyte | i just did not check for that to be honest! i presumed it was a pristine rootfs | 21:59 |
Tenkawa | I hear ya | 21:59 |
steev | c0rnelius: i haven't tried alsamixer i don't think. | 22:43 |
steev | yes, alsamixer lists everything - also, fwiw, re: that forum post - that's what the soundconfig stuff that libreelec has does, based on whether you have TDM_A or B or whatever it is | 22:44 |
c0rnelius | I'm looking at the config right now. Doesn't seem to do anything. | 22:45 |
steev | soundconfig, from libreelec's stuff | 23:17 |
