snakei just read an article that the valve on the masks i bought (didnt arrive yet) is a compromise... the mask will protect me but not others if i have the virus01:45
LjLsnake, that's correct although i think it will protect others more than wearing *no* mask01:46
LjLdepending on where you are, though, people may shun you for wearing a "selfish" mask, at least that's what they've been nicknamed here01:46
LjLto be honest, N95 or similar masks are entirely terrible to breathe in for extended periods of time and/or in the summer01:46
snakewhat if everyone wore a selfish mask?01:46
snakethen we'd be covered :P01:46
LjLthere wouldn't be enough for everyone, for sure01:46
LjLwe don't even have enough surgical masks01:47
snakeif everyone took care of themselves then everyone would be taken care of01:47
ryoumajust tape the valve01:47
LjLsnake, those masks aren't *available* here, haven't really been since March01:47
snakeLjL, there are reusable one with carbon filter inserts01:47
LjLlol01:47
snakeryouma, will it still work?01:47
ryoumayes01:47
LjLyou obviously don't live in Italy snake01:47
LjLwe can mostly just get the price-capped 50 cent masks01:47
ryoumawhich is why i said it :)01:47
snakeLjL, no i dont01:47
snakeLjL, i gotchu01:48
ryoumahttps://unherd.com/2020/07/is-there-really-a-covid-mental-health-crisis/01:48
snakesend me ur PO box i will buy you sum and just pay me back ok?01:48
LjLsnake, any place that has been hit heavily will have shortages of masks, and N95 or similar will be mostly reserved for medical workers (and/or hoarded unethically)01:48
LjLsnake, i'm fine, my mom sewed masks with cotton and "non-woven fabric" filters inside!01:49
snakeok :)01:49
LjLactually i managed to buy a grand total of ONE mask with a valve, once01:49
ubLIX"snake what if everyone wore a selfish mask?"  -  the value of the masks is (substantially) in preventing emission, not in preventing egress01:49
LjLrelatively early in the epidemic, but still strange i found one01:49
LjLubLIX, i have no idea what you just said01:49
ubLIXs/egress/ingress/01:49
LjLoh01:49
LjLubLIX, in the case of those masks with valves, the value is substantially in preventing ingress01:50
LjLthey are always N95 or higher grade, not surgical or lower01:50
ubLIXwhich, while true, is substantially irrelevant for epidemiological purposes01:50
snake%cases pennsylvania01:51
Brainstormsnake: In Pennsylvania, US, there have been 105384 confirmed cases (0.8% of the population) and 7084 deaths (6.7% of cases) as of 2 hours ago. 969757 tests were performed (10.9% positive). See https://offloop.net/covid19/?default=US for time series data.01:51
LjLubLIX, why? i mean snake is right, if everyone wore N95 or higher during any interaction, it would be substantially as good as everyone wearing surgical, or better01:51
LjLit's just that those masks cost much more and therefore are going to be much rarer01:51
LjLor vice versa01:51
snakeubLIX, i'll switch to the altruistic mask if everyone is wearing one at the bonfire01:52
snakeotherwise, i'll wear the selfish one01:52
ubLIXN95+unfiltered exhaust valve better than surgical mask?01:52
ryoumafor which purpose?01:54
LjLsnake, i would recommend good surgical masks next time you buy them (how to make sure they're "good"? honestly ask someone else, i haven't figured it out yet). on paper, they are not as effective as N95, but supposedly N95 masks become much less effective when wet, and they *are* going to get wet when you breathe into them for a long time... the ones with valve will avoid that to some extent, but in my limited experience only a small extent. decent 01:54
LjLsurgical masks, on the other hand, instead of being made of just one material like N95 masks, have an external fiber that's water-repellent, to stop the moisture from others, a meltblown filter in the middle, and a water-absorbent material on the inside to catch your humidity. they can be better to wear in practice overall.01:54
ryoumabut you can tape valve.  it does work.01:54
LjLubLIX, if everyone wore one, sure, why not?01:55
LjLit's just unfeasible for everyone to wear one01:55
ryoumasurgical have meltblown?01:55
LjLand healthcare workers need them instead01:55
LjLryouma, afaik?01:55
ryoumai thought meltblown was the hepa-like substance01:55
LjLryouma, even some of the 50 cent ones here were... trying... to get meltblown01:55
LjLwell, if i'm wrong, then amend my statement to just say that there is a filtering material in the middle01:56
LjLpoint being, there are dedicated materials to take care of the moisture01:56
ryoumadefinietly, they are designed carefully01:56
ryoumai mean, for specific purposes01:56
LjLWikipedia goes "Surgical masks are made of a nonwoven fabric created using a melt blowing process."01:57
LjLdoesn't mean it's the *same* type of meltblown you might have in other kinds of mask, i don't know that.01:57
ubLIXsnake: "if everyone ... at the bonfire" wtf does that even mean?01:58
ryoumaok great thanks for looking up01:59
LjLsnake, in any case, definitely *don't* wear the mask with a valve if you're going to a healthcare facility where you're required to wear a mask. they may turn you down.01:59
LjLsome healthcare workers wear an N95 with a valve *covered by* a surgical mask02:00
LjLthat's mostly useful so that they can throw away the cheaper surgical after every patient, while conserving the more expensive mask for longer02:00
LjLmy sister was asked to wear two masks stacked when she went to a clinic recently02:00
snakeLjL, ok thanks for the tip02:00
ryoumathey do not tape the valve?02:00
snakeubLIX, do you know what a bonfire is?02:01
LjLryouma, not afaik, but that's taken care of by having he surgical on top02:01
ryoumasome of that air goes around though02:01
ubLIXsnake: ?02:01
ryoumaso not in front of you which is good but still in the air02:01
snakethis guy. lol02:02
LjLryouma, they wear those things all day, they need to find some way to make it bearable. anyway, the standard alternative would be that normally they'd just be wearing a surgical mask, period. that can't be worse02:02
ubLIXkick snake 02:02
snakeubLIX, try answering yes/no, moron :P02:02
LjLsnake, calm the hell down02:02
ryoumaLjL: sure just asking02:02
LjLsnake, also don't insult people02:03
LjLsnake, FWIW i also have no idea what that statement meant02:03
LjLi think i know what a bonfire is, but i don't really get what you were saying02:03
snakeok, i am actually going to a bonfire02:04
snakenot today, but some other day02:04
LjLi think you were seeing "selfish" as opposite to "altruistic" in the sense that the "altruistic" mask wouldn't protect you, only others02:04
LjLbut in fact if you just buy an N95 or similar without a valve, that's as "altruistic" as any mask without a valve, but also it protects yourself as much as the one with a valve02:04
snakeyup, you got it02:05
snakethat's what I meant02:05
LjLsnake, well, we didn't know that, and it was pretty easy to interpret your statement as an idiom we weren't getting, or as sneering or something02:05
snakeubLIX, sorry I didn't understand which part you were asking about. I thought it was the part you wrote, not the part you omitted02:06
snakeand sorry i misunderstood your ? and then reacted with an insult especially02:06
ubLIXi was trying to understand why you would so brazenly avow your indifference to your entire point of authorities' mandating masks in the first place02:07
LjLto be fair authorities recommended *against* using masks for a good part of our outbreak02:08
ubLIXand wtf bonfires had to do with anything02:08
LjLso if you don't mind, fuck authorities02:09
snakewell i admitted that i'd rather protect myself than protect nobody02:09
snakebut now i realize there are masks without a tradeoff02:09
snakeplus i could probably just use tape over the valve?02:09
LjLyeah, ryouma said that a few times :P you can02:09
snakeyes02:09
LjLalthough i still wouldn't recommend that if you're going somewhere where you are specifically asked to wear a mask02:10
LjLbecause they may not get it and just know that kind of mask isn't okay02:10
yosemetimasks are important02:10
yosemetithe valve thing is probably relatively minor compared to wearing a mask02:10
LjLquite possibly02:10
LjLeven with a decent (but "layman") fit, you're going to have a lot of your breath come out from the top02:11
LjL(just try wearing any mask with glasses...)02:11
LjLa mask with a valve dumps it to the bottom02:11
ryoumamy valves go straight out, unfortunately02:11
ryoumaoh you mean the edges?02:11
LjLit's probably going to be similar or better (assuming it somehow makes it *all* go downwards rather than upwards, which is unlikely)02:11
LjLryouma, oh, okay02:12
LjLno, nevermind in case the valve is straight out02:12
LjLthe valves i've seen toss the air downwards02:12
LjLand others mentioned the same thing before so i kind of assumed they were all like that02:12
ryoumai wasn't aware that disposables did the downward thing02:13
LjLryouma, to be fair mine was a friggin' €13 disposable02:14
LjLthat's why i bought ONE02:14
LjLbut then later they were selling bad and smelly KN95s for the same price, anyway02:15
ryoumasmelly?  :(02:15
LjLyeah02:15
ryoumanot good for mcs02:15
LjLmcs?02:15
ryoumathose who have to be cautious about stuff that they might react to02:15
ryoumabtw i do know that one of the honeywell half faceplate goes straight and one of the 3m half faceplate goes down.  however, this was designed to reduce fogging glasses and goggles and such, not for altruistic contagion purposes.  (i was recommended teh honeywell for non-pandemic-related purposes, not sure the reason over 3m,  and looked up both.)02:16
ryoumai do find that the half faceplates are quite annoying.  the valves are just discs of rubber-like material and they get stuck so you end up breathing out through the filters, or there is a click and you have to exhale hard to get that.02:17

LjLthey are definitely neither02:24

snakeholy shit its n2302:24
LjLN95 and N99 are certifications, so if something isn't certified to be one of those things, they aren't those things02:25
LjLbut also yeah, they are definitely not even nearly as effective02:25
LjLalso, incidentally, a paper towel would be considered an acceptable face covering under the law here02:25
LjLand yet i'm pretty DAMNED sure that a mask with a downward exhaust valve would protect BOTH myself and others better02:25
ryoumathere are masks designed so that you can put a paper towel in between layer 1 and 302:29
ryoumaidk if that is brilliant or not useful02:29
LjLryouma, a paper towel? i would assume that's to put in some actual filtering material (like usefully filtering)02:30
ryoumamaks with valves were probably designed for construction workers and so on02:30
snakeyeah my first masks had that, a pocket to put filter or paper towels02:30
snakehave*02:31
snakestill use them02:31
ryoumacan anybody recommend an amazon mask (medical-but-not-considered-unethical or nonmedical) that would likely be acceptable at a medical institution that is good?02:33
snakei cannot, sorry02:37
snakedidn't get mine yet (and its the one that has a valve so no good)02:37
LjLme neither, i wish i'd had the willpower to sift through Amazon and figure out what are signs of a mask being good, but i haven't02:37
LjLbut also you should probably specify it's about the US ryouma because European Amazons would have entirely other items in general02:38

ryoumaLjL what exactly is your question?  maybe i can provide a short reponse.03:26
LjLryouma, just why the article was so quickly downvoted and all the comments on it are negative. but it's been pointed out to me that it's littered with ads (which i simply did not see, as i've got ad blocking) and also with self-back-linking keywords, like "cancer", which are for dishonest SEO... which i simply hadn't noticed because i didn't know this03:27

LjLand "This crummy article is at least based on an op-Ed written by a doctor in the Guardian. Still not a scientific article though"03:31
LjLalso the sentence the article starts with, "People who have been seriously unwell and treated on intensive care units can expect to take some months to recover fully, regardless of their ailment.", turns out you can find it on many other websites, so this is probably a copypaste article that's circulating03:33

pwr22Hey LjL and tinwhiskers, how're you both doing?18:16
LjLpwr22, hey. i'm making my blood pressure spike by trying to explain to Redditors that they shouldn't downvote people for stating the obvious, i.e. that yesterday's +0 deaths in Lombardy are due to it being a Sunday (on Sundays there is always lower accounting than usual) - instead the comments that are like "Go Italy" etc get hundreds of upvotes18:17
LjLi don't care about being downvoted per se, but it maddens me that people get whatever rhetoric they like to hear18:17
LjLand even if you spoonfeed them the graphs18:17
LjLthey'll just downvote you and think "the Sunday thing is an absurdity, let's believe the one who said it's great news instead"18:18
LjLand to be fair it's kind of good news anyway, the numbers had never been so low before, even on *other* sundays18:18
LjLbut hey guess what18:18
LjLtoday we have +13 cases in italy18:18
LjL+8 of which are in lombardy18:18
pwr22Hmm, seems like people would rather believe what they want to believe than what the evidence suggests18:18
LjLwill this fact make yesterdayrs?'s numbers an obvious outlier to those reddito18:18
LjLwill this fact make yesterday's numbers an obvious outlier to those redditors?*18:18
LjLmost assuredly not, they won't even go back to reading that thread18:19
pwr22Is your government actively engaging in propaganda like ours is?18:19
pwr22Like, our cases started going back up now and deaths even too18:19
LjLpwr22, well they have played with the numbers a fair bit18:19
LjLbut mostly i think they're telling us to be cautious, although there's definitely camps18:19
LjLthe good+bad thing about italy is that propaganda is hard to push, i think18:19
LjLbecause you never get an "orderly line" of people to agree to present the same view18:20
LjLdisagreeing openly and loudly is part of our culture18:20
LjLsometimes it's a rather terrible thing18:20
LjLbut it has its upsides18:20
pwr22UK has just stopped publishing deaths now18:21
pwr22Because they are too high apparently18:21
LjLpwr22, i've also kind of gone back to the "lab escape" theory, i'm almost afraid to mention it because by now it's been labelled a clear conspiracy theory by almost everyone, but... i still find it intuitively plausible (it doesn't have to be a "bioweapon", that's nonsense, lab accidents happen in a number of ways), and i've read some things that make it seem even compelling18:21
pwr22That's some fucking trump level shit18:21
blkshp11 yesterday 9 the day before.18:21
LjLpwr22, well what i read is that they stopped because they weren't being reported accurately so they are working on an improvement18:21
LjLbut that may have been a massaging of the truth18:21
pwr22<LjL "pwr22, i've also kind of gone ba"> Yeah, I'm not sure it matters now at this point. Like, I'd rather we focus on managing the disease and sort out blaming whoever afterwards18:22
pwr22<LjL "but that may have been a massagi"> Yeah, but the thing is they are likely massaged numbers anyway18:22
LjLpwr22, yes, fair enough, although for all i know, if researchers had the record straight on its origins and the mechanisms by which it became so well-adapted to humans, they may find it easier to tackle it18:22
pwr22I think what they mean is "cases are going up so we need to come up with a new profile of manipulation to prevent it looking like deaths are going up"18:23
LjL(or not, i'm not a virologist, but it doesn't seem implausible)18:23
pwr22And as far as I know the thing they're talking about is that if someone has covid, then dies 2 months later, it counts as a covid death18:23
LjLpwr22, and anyway, in italy we're in a bit of a "pause" i guess while we wait for a second wave, so i've gone back to the origins instead of fixating on the numbers... i think sure, right now let's face the crisis, but eventually, people have a right to know what caused our lives to be stormed unprecedentedly like this18:23
pwr22But how do you work out if that person would have died anyway?18:23
pwr22Yeah, indeed18:24
pwr22If it is a lab leak it's pretty bad18:24
BrainstormNew from BBC Health: Coronavirus: Local lockdown in Blackburn 'a last resort': Cases have doubled in the past week, prompting fears of tighter restrictions in the borough. → https://is.gd/9egwyr18:24
LjLpwr22, well, you'd know but looking at italy's study that analyzed that. they found that of all our deaths "with" COVID that have been reported, 89% were actually deaths "from" COVID. it's reasonable to assume a similar percentage applies to other countries18:24
LjLso if you consider also that there's almost assuredly more than 10% deaths unaccounted for (people who died at home, never tested, etc)18:25
LjLi'm pretty sure the deaths estimate is still an underestimate, not an overestimate18:25
pwr22Yeah, plus it's the same methodology scotland etc are using and we've been consistently using it since the start18:25
pwr22So there shouldn't need to be a time to take the stats offline to adjust them either18:25
pwr22It's just fishy18:26
pwr22And just when our deaths are going up again18:26
pwr22I'm in the camp of thinking this thing is going to worsen again hard in winter18:27
LjLpwr22, https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/hu2lwn/italys_lombardy_once_the_epicenter_of_the/fyo84mk/?context=3  took me forever to write this post because archive.org lengthtily refused to save the Sole 24 Ore page...18:33
LjLpwr22, i would also look at the US: as you've probably heard the White House is "taking control" of the numbers instead of letting them go to the CDC18:34
BrainstormNew from CNBC Health: (news): Coronavirus live updates: Vaccine trials by Oxford-AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech show positive results → https://is.gd/QJihOY18:34
LjLand my personal hunch is that while they're setting the spotlight on *cases*18:34
LjLwhat they'll mangle is the *deaths*18:34
LjLthe cases, by now it's obvious, the US is on the whole gone exponential, you cannot undo that18:34
LjLbut many people are saying "it's no longer a big deal because the deaths aren't growing, we've learned to treat it now, it's just a flu again"18:34
LjLexcept if you look at the smoothed graph of the deaths, there seems to be an indication they're *just* starting to spike again18:35
LjLwhich should be even clearer if you look at individual states where the... state of thing is bad18:35
LjLso if they start massaging the deaths numbers right now, they can make that not become apparent18:35
LjLin the meanwhile, Trump is trumpetting things like "if we tested half as much, we'd have half as many cases" to move the spotlight on cases rather than deaths18:36
LjLi may be wrong, but bottom line: keep a keen eye on the deaths more so than on the cases18:36
LjLin case anything "unnatural" can be noticed18:36
pwr22Yeah18:36
