rwp | My Thinkpad x201 has only 4G of RAM and I have no problems running i3 as a window manager and Firefox. I do have 8G of swap configured. Firefox is the memory pig to watch out for. | 04:46 |

fluffywolf | I have 16G of ram and firefox eats it. I got 16 because it let me go longer between firefox restarts than 8. I haven't had 4 in a while, but I seem to remember firefox only being good a few days at a time. because firefox is a stupidly bad memory leaker and always has been... | 04:48 |
Xenguy | fluffywolf, So basically 4 Gb is perfectly sufficient, or ...? | 04:54 |
Xenguy | I would think it still would be plenty, for linux | 04:54 |
brocashelm | the problem is software | 04:55 |
brocashelm | there are alternatives to firefox if memory is an issue, like librewolf | 04:55 |
brocashelm | netsurf is good if you want something very minimal | 04:55 |
eyalroz | @rwp: I also use an x201. It used to be super-slow with an HDD and 4GB of RAM (even on a thin Linux distribution; it's not Devuan though). The main "culprits" were supposedly the browsers, and I'm sure they had something to do with it, but it's not the fact that they "eat up" the RAM, since like @fluffywolf says that also happens with more RAM. | 17:58 |
eyalroz | I sprang for an 8 GB stick and an SSD and am now mostly happy with performance. I mean, ok, it's over 11 years old by now, but still, worth every penny. | 17:58 |
eyalroz | And that's without reconfiguring anything. | 17:59 |
